No, it's too northerly, and besides, I hear that willows have grown
completely across the Missouri River in places in Montana. I've a
rear-wheel drive car that I'm taking, and thus avoiding snow and ice if I
can. Salt Lake City is in my future--I'm sure that lake won't freeze this
winter.

However, I can recommend William Least Heat Moon's book "Riverhorse",
which is an account of a power boat trip across the USA by river (almost
completely by river), mostly in a C-Dory. I liked the book. Others might
not.

I don't suppose you are going to follow Lewis & Clark's route. They
didn't take their boats over the mountains anyway.

Alas, no. It would be great, but I have the choice of trailing all our
child-gear, work computers, clothes, and things we need to live, or the
Harmonica.

I lost the "discussion".

I agree, however:

1) I'm pretty sure they're ambivalent about the process
2) Would rather go boating and design boats than design ad copy
3) Don't really need the money.

On #3, I tried to temp Bolger with finishing a design called "Outboard
Cruiser" that was an SBJ cartoon (it's in the Files somewhere). I offered
him plenty of cash (well, it seemed so to me).

He wasn't offended, he just said "I'm too busy with other things."
My guess is that he was telling the truth. He only does that work that
interests him.

Wish that were my situation.
Wait, I'm on an academic sabbatical, leaving for Vancover BC in less than
two weeks. It IS my situation!

Leaving all my boats behind, though.

FYI....I ordered set of kayak plans from them and received them within 5
days. I'm frankly disappointed in the quality of the instructions,
especially considering the $55 price tag and the one print could use some
more scaled dimensions (all of which I fed back to vendor). Bottom line, I
have no problem with their response and I have enough info to build a decent
hard chine, Greenland style kayak.

Bruce,
Point taken.I had completely forgotten about that long ago
announcement regarding the "catalogue".I am also guilty of forgetting
that there was also a time when I was nothing more then a snotty nosed
neophyte eager to lap up anything I could find about boats and boy was
I ever hungry!Today,I erred in assuming"everybody" just
knows.Didn't mean to offend you, must be something in the wine........

Peter,
While the books are great, they aren't the type of catalog I was
referring to. I have all five, and not one has a price list or an
order form in them. PCB has always resisted reprinting his first
books, citing "intra-library loan" as the way to read his earlier
works. That's fine, as long as somebody hasn't been there ahead of
you with a razor-blade. I never knew what was in the middle of
the "Folding Schooner" until I bought one.
In the August 15th,1996 issue of MAIB, PB&F announced the
creation of a catalog of the over 600+ plans. Four years later,
nothing. It doesn't take an MBA to figure out that they'd sell more
plans and reach more potential cutomers,(like Wendy), if a printed
catalog or price list were available.

Hoping you have an early and quiet spring, no ice dams and
floods. I've loved Mr bolgers books they have provided hundered
if not thousands of hours of plesent armchair boating. much of
my water eduication is the nautical insites in his books.
Some advertising is there to irritate so you notice and
remember, some just to get the name out and the very best is
almost pure intertainment. the old SBJ Bolger cartoons were a
world of new ideas.

I was always under the impression that HIS twice monthly"articles",
which appear in Messing About In Boats, while informative, inspiring and
even entertaining were really just nifty advertisements in and of
themselves. In the same spirit but with more effort, then the ads from
Eddy and Duff were in SBJ years ago.........
To date,PCB has published 5"catalogues" ie;books, which are just hard
bound expensive advertising vehicles and like alot of good
catalogues, most are sadly out of print.
Anyone keen enough to dream of building a boat with their own hands
would almost certainly have come across WOODENBOAT magazine, seen
articles/designs from PCB or at least his books peddled from the
magazines' catalogue and even Paysons' ad.The NET too renders a goodly
chunk of"free" advertising for PCB.I faxed the designer this past

Thanks bgbeck (don't know what else to call you).
I hope I am a bit luckier than you.
I have their catalogue and so automatically ordered from them. I have
not seen Phil Bolger's address and understood he doesn't sell plans
direct. Pity.

Any other assistance would be appreciated, group.

Thanks,
Wendy.
I ordered plans from them for a canoe a couple of years ago,
Wendy. I didn't get them until I phoned them. Even then I got the
wrong plans and their "fix" was to send me a download that I can't
use because I don't have a CAD program.
I won't order anything from them ever again. You probably should
have ordered from Phil Bolger & Friends. Granted they haven't seen
fit to advertise, put out a catalog, or even a price list, but PCB
is available for consultation. All you'll get from CSB is a re-hashed
sales pitch.

Dear group:

I cannot get an email response from Common Sense Boats.
I have ordered and paid for Micro plans from them.
Their published email address on their web site is:
mailto:mariner@...;bernie@...

Anybody else having problems? Can anyone assist?

Many thanks,
Wendy
