Hi Col - I think about doing this sometimes too. My lines are all still up
forward. So I will watch and wait to see if there are good answers
suggested. It also means running the downhaul back to the cockpit - And I
have a two part downhaul. I also have an adjustable parrel which would need
be led aft and lazy jacks. Lazy jacks - halyard ( which takes some sweating
sometimes), peak halyard, parrel, downhaul. Whenever I start thinking about
it and counting the lines on this "simple rig" I decide again to leave them
forward. Steve Anderson ( MJ Landroval)

Thanks for the kind words -- 99% of the credit must go to PCB for an almost
perfect design (for me anyway.) I keep another picture of her as wallpaper
on my office computer, so I remember that yes, I do have a life out there!

Grand adventures, no -- not just yet. I have some mild ones planned for
next summer, up the coast a bit.

Jesus Jamie,I knew I shouldn't have clicked on those two links to
pictures of your boat!Everytime I go to Johns' Port Townsend
photos(once a week) and see your Wayward Lass,I get to thinking that I
somehow must have wasted my youth away in terrible ways for me not to
have built a Bolger Chebacco........a really sweet design and your
rendering of it very handsome indeed!!!When you look at pictures of
your boat or sail it,does it cause you to dream of grand adventures or
even a slightly bigger version?

Col (and others)

At the risk of seeming a show-off, can I direct you to the pictures of my
Wayward Lass at the sites below. These show how I dealt with the same
question -- turning blocks at the bottom of the mast, fairleads at the
forward end of the hatch slides, and regular horn cleats handy to the
cockpit. I've got halyards to starboard and topping lift to port.

I would have put the turning blocks up level with the back of the mast, but
the cabin top gets very narrow there, so I've got them a little further
back. The wider stance this allows keeps the ropes clear of the jaws,
although being back a bit they touch the sail sooner on a reach or a run.
Maybe MJ has more width to work with there.

I'm considering adding cam cleats just ahead of the horn cleats for
convenience when single handing, and so the kids can manage them, but cam
cleats are expensive, so I've done nothing about it yet.

These are on John Kohnen's Port Townsend page. It's well worth having a
look around the rest of the page (and the whole site, if you haven't been
there.)

Hi group,
Can anyone describe the simplest method of redirecting the
various lines from the mast base to the cockpit on Martha Jane (or
similar boats). PB doesn't go into a lot of detail, presuming prior
knowledge, and with me thats very limited.

Col Mooney,
One method,as used for the Micro, involves securing a
padeye(eyebolt) to the mast partner just abreast of the mast.To this
padeye is attached a swivel block(pulley) through which a line coming
from the mast is re-directed aft to the cocpit and a cleat.
I do not have MJ plans in front of me,but imagine a set of cheek
blocks could be secured to the mast tabernacle(one set, each side of
the tabernacle) through which lines could be lead aft to the
cocpit.Hopefully, the experienced MJ owner/builders in the group will
chip in with more precision.
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, slowing thawing out from the cold.........
