To All,

Closet pole oars with plywood blades work great and, I believe, are in
keeping with Mr. Bolger's design philosophy. I made a double paddle
with "spoon blades" from those materials and used a short length of
aluminum tubing and a piece of shock cord to form a "broken joint"
that allows the paddle to be used as "auxiliary power" for, and stored
in, an 8ft El Toro dinghy. The whole thing cost under 10 bucks and
sure beats trying to use a canoe paddle on an 8ft pram (it tends to
just go in circles with the single paddle).

Re. "insults": Sometimes our sense of humor doesn't always come
through in print. I'm sure that we all could work a little harder at
1) developing a slightly "thicker skin" and 2) reviewing what we write
before we send it.

(Hope I didn't offend anyone with this).

An ironic tone of voice often does not translate to print very well,
causing a lot of trouble on lists. When your first take is to be
insulted, check to see you havn't missed a less-than-skillful attempt
at humor. - PHV

One day when I was looking at the Newfoundlander (MWAOM), I mused on
how I would like to rearrange the deck plan. I added rope clutches, a
winch, a traveler, a vang..... I realized that I had added perhaps
$1500 of gear that, trained a racing sailor, I would like to have.
But the actual utility on a casual daysail would be quite low.

Still, if my gaff was sagging, I **really** want to have the
mechanical advantage to just tweak it up, without having to luff up
to relieve the strain.

Hi,

I am what you would call a lurker I suppose.  I don't have any thing to contribute yet, as I am here to learn from all the
expertise that appears in this group.  I learned early on that
you have to put up with lots of BS on the newsgroups, but
the delete key and the positives make it worthwhile. Remember that most of us appreciate all the info.

Subject:[bolger] Insults

I am appalled at the insults and ridicule that are so commonly posted.
In my own case a blast was issued as a result of my offering, free,
something very useful.
Two bad things happen as a result of this.  Rather than expose themselves
to this, people lurk, instead of making what would likely be useful and
interesting input.  Other just drop off the list.
At this point I feel inclined to comment on the qualities, apparent from
theirs postings, of the people who do it- but that would be me doing just
what I am complaining about.

I think that this is one of the more civil groups on the web. Even
some of the boatbuilding sites are a little stuffy. Case in point:

I, for one, was genuinely interested in your homemade oars. I am
sorry that you took some reply as an insult - I'm sure that was not
its intent. People who build Bolger boats just don't seem like the
type to belittle homemade, cheap fixes. The whole point of many of
Mr. Bolger's designs seems to be to remove boating from the exclusive
province of the affluent and it available to middle class slobs like
me. For instance, in many of his designs he calls for dumsheaves and
deadeyes where a designer to the yacht club crowd would call for
several hundred dollars worth of harken blocks.

Also, I personally wear the adjective "crappy" as a badge of honor.
My favorite boat is made of luaun plywood and covered below the
waterline in fiberglass (or f********* for you wooden boat purists)
set in polyester resin. The sails are made of polytarp or tyvek.
The inside of the hull is painted with latex house paint. I've been
waiting for years for the predictions of the so-called experts to
come true and for the boat to disintegrate. In the meantime, I've
spent more time on the water in my crappy boat than most
affluent "sailors" spend in their proper sailboats.

Don't worry about it Bill. Keep posting your information. Most
people that post insults lead such "crappy little lives" that insults
make them feel somehow big and powerful.

Bill --

I am guessing that you were appalled by my words "crappy home-made
oars." Be sure that those words apply only to the oars that *I* would
make using your plans, not the oars you have mostly likely already
made and are undoubtedly beautiful beyond compare.

For many of us on this list, making boats in not a way to express our
aspirations to high craft, but rather a relatively harmless way to
indulge our penny wise but pound foolish instincts. Bolger himself
addresses this quite eloquently in his forward to "Instant Boats."

So be of good humor, presume the best in your fellows until their
evil intention are well proven -- and post those plans to the files.
Winter's been hard on the last pair of crappy home-built oars I made
(with the benefit of no plan,) and I need a new pair!

David
