Re: Making Cheap Oars from Lumberyard Materials
John,
Thanks for making all things nautical so easily available(and
free) to so many of us!A better resource for boatnuts is difficult to
imagine!
Bill Wallace,
Nifty little idea for oars you have there!Just the sort of thing
tinkerers need. The fun and interesting thing about those oars is that
anyone can build them and with a bit of experience, begin adding their
own modifications as they see fit.Once you begin to
discover/experience the simple pleasures found with rowing,it is just
a matter of time before you will break the first pair which then gives
you the happy excuse for building another pair just a wee bit better
and thus the cycle repeats.
In the most recent couple of Messing About In Boats
magazines, there was a good article on making some really fancy oars
with hollow looms and curved blades made with a simple jig.I suspect
anyone who gets hooked with basic oar making one day aspires to
eventually make super fancy oars like those!
Thanks for planting a seed for future oar builders Bill.
Happy Rowing!

Thank you Bill Wallace for, "keeping the idea alive" and thanks John
for bringing it to our attention. As much as I like the boat hook idea,
the concave ends is even more impressive. Anyone that has spent more
than five minutes in a row boat will agree, that it is the best idea to
come along since somebody, way back when, came up with the idea of using
oarlocks.
Well done; Bill and John, Stan, S.G.

Believe me my young friend, there is nothing--absolutely nothing--
half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.
