RE:Cheap oars/paddles

Hi,

Been following this thread with interest. Some years ago I made myself a
feathered double-paddle using a similar method, but I scooped the closet
pole part where it screwed onto the blades, giving spoon blades. The closet
pole continued right to the tip of the blade, and was tapered to disappear
at the blade's end.

This paddle looked fantastic from around 20 feet, because I'd used
Herreshoff's patterns for the blade shapes - Very posh! The other nice
thing about it was, since I'd only taken an evening to make it, I had no
worries about fending off and poling with it. Incidentally, it's still (10
years later) in regular use (if a little battered round the edges) by the
guy who bought my canoe from me.
