MA,
Am considering a Sport dory, like yours, as I am in need of
some exercise. Enjoy your web site, and I, also, have a set
of Micro plans (I think darn near everyone does) Maybe someday...
My AF4 is built out of BC pine exterior; the sides are 3/8";
the bottom is 5/8"; the bulkheads are all 1/4"; the cabin tops
are 5.2 mm luan, and the transom is laminated from 2 layers
of 5/8" BC and one layer of 5.2 mm luan. Butt straps on the sides
are 1 x4, per plans; butt straps on the bottom are 1 X 6, except
the center one is 1 X 8 because there would have been a 1 inch
gap between the forward edge of the butt strap and the center
bulkhead. The chines have (2) layers of 3" tape, but there is
no other fiberglass, and no epoxy coating. Both the primer and
topcoat paints are all latex exterior. Also, only one "keel"
on the bottom, a tapered 2 x 4.
Completed, less motor, motor controls, and steering
controls, the boat weighs 410 lbs.
As I am sure you will remember, Jim's boat was still
able to barely plane with 10 hp, and you, me, and Jim in
it. I weigh all of 230 lbs (and not because of, as Jim delicately
put it on his web site, my "heavy boots and clothes"!),
so I have little doubt the design can stand some extra
weight. Concerning bottom strength, I have the boat
sitting on a pair of 2 ft by 2 ft wheeled dollies, and
see little flex in the bottom as I walk around in it.
The old '57 Johnson 18 hp shown in the pictures is
the same outboard that pushed Jim's @ about 22 mph, and I
think is was a little "over-propped", i.e. too much pitch
in the propeller, so it may have had a little more potential.
I intend to run mostly 15's and 18's on mine, with an
occasional antique of about 9 1/2 hp when I feel the need
to run something "old" (1957 aint "old"). I do not intend
to use anything bigger that the 18's, which I believe
will produce about 20 mph with just me in it. Assuming
flat water, of course. By the way, late model outboards
are rated on prop shaft horsepower- my older ones are not.
After riding around in Jim's AF4, and after building
mine, I think the AF4 is about the best design around for
an 18 foot flat-bottom skiff- very easy and quick to build,
low power requirements, and if someone were to put in
a little more effort than I did, it could be very nice looking
indeed.
To modify a Bolger quote, let's just say that, if one
backs away from mine 20 feet, "... that boat looks real good."
Keep in touch, and put Rend Lake in your travel plans.

Max,
We met at last year's Messabout. I had a blast riding around in your little
skiff powered by that wonderful old knucklebuster outboard.
I've been corresponding with Jim about AF4 and even stuck a check in the
mail for a set of plans. He said you had an AF4 about ready to go. My Micro
project is going on hiatus while I build an AF4 for myself. Since I already
have a pile of 3/8 and 1/2" plywood in the garage, my boat will probably be
a little heavier than Jim's. Jim told me you built yours with the same
scantlings that I'm considering. Have you got any idea about the weight? I'm
a little concerned especially since I want a little more furniture than you
or Jim did in your boats. I liked the way Jim's boat ran with the three of
us aboard and I want mine to do about the same with a full load of about 500
lbs of family and gear. How big a motor are you using and how fast do plan
to go? I'm figuring you'll need about 20 hp to push it at 15 mph with a full
load.
I just DL'ed the pictures of yours the other night to show my wife. She
approved the project on the basis of your photos, so I appreciate your
contribution.
(It's probably blasphemy to say I'm putting the Micro project on hiatus on
this group. Rest assured you Micrites, I'll get back to it sooner or later.
A power cruiser just makes more sense for us right now.)

I have uploaded files with one of these engines hanging

When I get bored with that, I have several old Evinrude
"light-fours" which are non-shift, 4 cylinder opposed,

Rend Lake , is the spring Midwest messabout.. it is located in the
mid-southern part of Illinois. The lake is located about an hour south
of the I-70.... I-57 junction... or just about 20 miles ( I think) south
of the I-57 ..... I-64 junction ... look on an Illinois map and you can't
miss it.
Last year I went and took a few pictures.. I believe that the pictures are
still on the duckwork's website...
www.duckworks.com
also you might watch Jim Michalak's web site for the dates... it is
usually the first weekend in June.. I am not sure what dates are set for it
.
http://homepages.apci.net/~michalak/
hope that helps!

Hi Chris:
Yes, I am planning to attend, with Caprice in tow. I am not sure of the
exact date, but I am pretty sure it is in June. Jim Michalak will have the
date on his site. I am looking forward to meeting you and Dave there.
