Re: PCB&F, CSB etc. (plan support)

This, I don't understand. When I think about boats, I stay awake all
night.

PHV
I bought my Chebacco plans from PCBc (before Payson started offering
Chebacco plans, I think.) PCB warned me that the plans had been drawn for a
professional and that they didn't have a building key. He offered to answer
any questions I had, and replied promptly to the one letter I sent. I used
his suggested method for gluing up my mast and it went together very easily.

By reading the recommended Build the New Instant Boats, and studying the
plans, you will get all the information necessary to do the job. Reading
other boatbuilding books will help too, (e.g. Devlin). I built the boat in
my head, piece by piece, as I went. (I fell asleep most nights thinking
about it.) There's no rocket science here, just plywood and epoxy.

PCB delivered what he promised, and maybe a bit over. Can't ask for more
than that.

That's the case indeed. Those sold by Dynamite are "Instant boat"
plans, so one is supposed to read his books on the subject and just
build without asking any question - Dynamite does respond though,
he's very kind and supportive -. In my opinion, however, the Chebacco
should be regarded as a special case, since those plans are very
basic indeed, with no building key at all. If it wasn't for Bill
Samson's hard work, I would say that the Chebacco couldn't be defined
as an Instant Boat...
In fact, to be entitled to get support from the head office, one has
to buy the plans, including the Instant Boats ones, from them
directly.
All this is not uncommon though. For example, I know that the
official Norwalk Island Sharpies plans are sold in several places,
but I've been told that Bruce Kirby prefers not to be contacted by
builders.
Best, Pippo
