Re: [bolger] And The "Perfect Boat" is ---

Pat,

Congratulations on making a choice!  I too perused the whole Bolger (and Wharram) inventory before striking out "half on my own" with the 20 foot Glen-L "Sweet Caroline" hull and my own accomodation plan.  I have named the resulting camp-cruiser "Emerald Coaster".  I just returned from her maiden voyage: 1400 miles on trailer to-from the Florida Keys, and 100 miles of gunkholing/snorkeling from ankle-deep in the turtle grass to six miles out in the Atlantic over the ocean reefs.

I'm putting together a report, the first installment is atwww.ecoastlife.com/keys2001.htm.  Dreams do work out occasionally!

Looking at the Yamaha page, I see two new high thrust versions, 8hp and 25 hp. Clyde

Doesn't it feel good when you've reached a conclusion? But, get on
with it or you may change your mind! Thanks also for posting the link
to Robert Bruce's site, I'd lost it in the switch from one computer
to another.

Make sure you get all of Jim Betts' GP-16 newsletters with the plans.
He published a half dozen or so and they had some good suggestions in
them.

Steve
Drum roll please.

"The Perfect Boat" And the winner is GP_16 designed by Jim Betts.

I know this is the Bolger page, but after looking at all
the examples I have seen here and searched on my own,
I have decided that the GP-16 best my needs.

"What I'm looking for is a boat that will sleep two (preferable
together) V or otherwise. Some sort of cooking facilities, table
for two, and a convenient place for a head (port-a-potty) that I
don't have to be sleeping over. (Not Standard V-birth with
port-a-potty under)
Would like modest aft deck space for two white plastic chairs for
fishing. And would like standing headroom in the "Cabin"
I'm 6' tall, my wife could get by with less, but my back doesn't
like bending over that much, and my bald head doesn't like banging
into things.
Speed is of little concern. We're on a boat and just being on a boat
which is mostly what it's all about. We,ve got time, and even at 5
miles/hr, thats 5 miles every hours. We're not going that far."

The GP-16 met all the requirements.
Only 16'long but 7'wide "Cabin scow". Small, gas friendly engine,
(4 cycle, if i can find one. My 1952 15 HP Johnson might have to be
the "Power" for a while.) Fairly easy to build.
As Jim Betts states, "Another factor was simplicity of building. This
is really just a floating "crate." (As opposed to Bolger's "boxes.)"
Small cabin with headroom, sink, place for port-a-potty.
The one big selling factor for me, although not in the original
requirements, was the "Higgins Boat" type "Landing Craft type ramp."
My wife had double hip replacement a couple of years, and finds
it almost impossible to "Climb" into a regular boat.

Boat consturction can be seen athttp://www.hotkey.net.au/~robruce

Thanks again for all the "Cards and Letters", and all the good ideas.

This is the next boat I am going to build when I am able.

Let's see what the next "Great Question" is going to be.

Pat Patteson

Future builder and futere owner of a GP-16.

Thanks all.

I'll let you know how it goes, and send pictures of building,
and let you know whether I made the correct choice.
