Re: Hovercrafts VS Robins
Yes Peter, it is almost Ice Out time in Central Massachusetts as
well. Yesterday, the robins were swirling around the snowbanks
hoping for some kind of handout while the mockingbirds were mocking
my efforts to line up the keel under "Firefly". It almost appeared
as if the birds knew I could not apply the goop in this cold
weather. I hope my labrador retriever eats one. Blast! Why does
Indian Summer come only in October? March comes in like a lion and
goes out like a wildebeast.

Well now,I have yet to spot one blasted robin about to herald in the
imminent arrival of Spring but did get shivers up my spine just the
other day when, through the constant rumble of city noise,I heard the
roar of the hovercraft!Rushing down a side street to the rivers edge,I
spotted her out on the ice in a cloud of snow, her black skirt just
barely visible as she performed awkward pirouettes. With each complete
turn of her hull, huge slabs of ice broke free to begin their
downstream journey to the Gulf of St.Lawrence.
With boyish wonderment,I followed her progress from the rivers edge
and marvelled at this bit of machinery capable of floating on a
cushion of air yet weighing a considerable number of tons.As she
gradually pulled away from me into the distance and the whine and
flutter of her twin turbines receded,I knew that Spring had finally
arrived!
Walking back from the banks of the river,I was struck by the
melancholy realization of how detached from nature I had allowed
myself to become. How hectic my life seemed to be.I had worn my
impatience with Winter like a coat.
It was then that I realized that boatbuilding, despite its'invariable
ups and downs, held for me a chance to re-discover another
vision,or at least a peek,of a quieter and more meditative approach to
passing through this life. The reward of a finished boat with all the
attendant pleasures it promises,is but the icing on the cake.It is the
cake that really fills the belly!
I hope that this new spring and soon to be summer comes filled with
good adventures for all Bolgerados and that you all enjoy a big
helping of cake!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, mulling over a big delicious piece and just barely able
to contain his excitement at this impending act of gluttony, from the
soon to be ice-free shores of the St.Lawrence.........
