[bolger] Re: howdy...newby in Pacific NW

Hey Rob!

I built and now sail a Windsprint. It's a 16' sharpie double ender. I live in
the Olympia area.

Andi,
It has been my experience that major rig alterations are fraught with peril.
It is not that different rigs can't be used on a particular design, but
variables such as the new rig's center of area (effort), weight aloft and
sail area can cause numerous handling problems potentially requiring the
redesigning of the boat's rudder and/or centerboard. In this case you are
considering putting what I suspect is an overly large sail (one designed for
an 18' catamaran) on an essentially round bottomed, narrow, 16' monohull. I
suspect that, if the rig is properly centered over the areas of lateral
resistance, you will have a boat that will go like hell in a zephyr, but
will be unmanageable and tender in any reasonable breeze without the
addition of a larger board and rudder and a lot of ballast. I hear that the
water's kinda cold in the Pacific Northwest. If you want to experiment with
sailing rigs or simply save some money, make your sails out of blue poly
tarp or Tyvek. Later you can sew up your own polyester sail (or have one
made), which is actually easier than trying to recut an old sail. You would
be better off letting you friend sell his stuff and use the money to buy you
some beer. This is just my opinion, of course, but I've done this sort of
stuff before myself, and I have the scars to prove it (thankfully, the boat
was biodegraded by environmentally conscientious termites some years ago).
Anyway, have fun,
david <galvind@...>

Hi group,
progress is slow but I'm finally starting to glue everything together. MY
question today is this, a friend offered me 3 main sails, a boom, and some
extras he has lying around he once used on an 18' catamaran. I'm building a
gypsy with a sprit rig. Will I be able to use the sails and boom? I'd hate
to take them without being able to use them when he could sell them and make
some money.

This has got to be a designer's worst nightmare.... ;-)

Howdy,
I'm Robert August (not the surfer) and I reside in Shelton,
Washington, USA. I stumbled onto this disgussion group a couple of days
ago and after reading through the past postings decided it would be a
place for me. I'v been a follower of PCB for many years (one of the
first books I can remember buying with "my own money" as a kid was
Phil's Small Boats which is still floating around the local library
system here). I've built several boats: a 12' skiff that was inspired
by Teal but imagine it split at the aft end and a transom fitted and
with a balanced lugsail (tarp type) and a Michalak type leeboard; a
traditional style skin and frame kayak about 13' x 28" and very tender;
and a Michalak Toto with some modifications. The next couple of
projects on the board (after I get all this computer stuff organized)
will be a kayak for my wife and another skiff as I sold the first to a
nice young family. Further in the future I'm thinking along the lines
of a Micro or Micro Navigator (2-3 years away maybe) and I frequently
day dream of an AS29 or AS39 for a liveaboard along the inside passage
(though the Puffer power livaboard featured a while ago in Messing
About in Boats looks really nice and roomy and might be an easier sell
with my wife). How many folks out there are from the Puget Sound area?
I'd be interested in attending a NW messabout next spring or summer.
Looking forward to Boaty disgussion. Rob
