Texas Dory
Most of the Texas Dory catalog I had was of Bolger boats. The Texas Dory
was a series boat, something like the Sea Hawk, in lengths of c.16' to
c.40'. The 36 and the 40 were 10' wide, the 30 was 8' and the smaller boats
had less beam. There was another series, name of which I forget, with a
mid-section something like a Gypsy. As I remember there were 4 or 5 models
from 18' to 30'. There were two dory shaped sailing surf boats at 22' and
26'. One was named Morning Light, I think. The Bolger part of the catalog
was rounded out with a light dory, a lap-straked plyboat 19' or 22'?, and
the Surfmaster series already mentioned. I may have missed a few, and the
details are not all clear - this was a "few" years ago.
I have the plans from the catalog for the Cofer designed dory very similar
to the later Glen-L Sweet Caroline, and a Benford dory that resembles the
St. Pierre. There were at least a couple of other Benford designs, a couple
from Billy Atkin, and a scattering of other designs. Altogether quite a
catalog. Wish I still had mine. Later on Capt. O added a number of old
designs of mostly inboard runabouts by Hacker and others.
I remember the Victor Harrasty designs of double-ended, single chine, ply ,
keel sailboats with mostly ketch rigs. I really wanted to build a 36, but
never did more than buy the study plans - long gone now. I did not remember
them to be part of the TD plans catalog. I ordered mine from Harrasty in
any case.
Sorry to be such an "old fart" and carry on so long, but I find that a lot
of the younger Bolgerites I run into have never heard of these sets of
Bolger boats. Shame for them to be lost. Bill Shenk
