Re: Vacationer
Greetings Ferdinand. Belated welcome to the group. I was off to Yarmouth for
the last couple of days so only saw your initial post this evening. Always
glad to see another Canadian on the list. Esp. glad to see another WDJ
builder (dreamer?) come out of the closet. I suspect your dreams include
visions of cruising Lake Winnipeg and her sister Winnipegosis (always
thought that name refered to a condition characterized by an obsession with
Winnipeg). Your brief weather report suggests that visions of sailing at the
moment requires skids or skis.
Please keep us posted on progress with the Vacationer, esp. her performance
when you get her on the water. She's a fetching craft and may eclipse your
dreams of following through with the WDJ. I've only built small Bolger boats
so far (June Bug and Gypsy)so easily hang on to a strong motivation to build
something that'll handle the old Bay of Fundy in good, bad, and ugly
conditions. I'll be particularly interested in reports on Vacationer's knock
down tolerance and recoverability, both of which I know can be readily
tested on your home waters.
Bjorn is obviously the leading contender for the next WDJ launch which makes
him one of our most prized gurus on the topic. But I still have William D.
Jochems email if you'd like to have it to add to you resource list. If I dig
back far enough I should also be able to find the name and email of another
WDJ builder/dreamer/planner who lives in Ottawa. Maybe we can form a
Northern WDJ Association (or support group).
The Canadian chapter of this group enjoys(?) an interesting spectrum on
spring. I've been looking at open (though scary)salt water all winter. I'm
just starting to see ice free bits of lake here and there. Peter Lennihan is
rejoicing at the first signs of the "red breasted" hovercraft on the St.
Lawrence. Sounds like real spring is still in the "mythical" stage for you.
Take heart, it WILL arrive. We won't mention that spoiled lot on the BC
coast. They don't really understand what we mean when we speak of winter.
jeb, starting to do touch up work on June Bug and Gypsy in an unheated shed
on the shores of Fundy

Seemed like a good time to introduce a couple of Bolger designs from
years back. I am amazed at the amount of boats he has designed for
people all over the world.
Enjoy the picture,

I think it is pretty obvious that you would have to go to a larger
boat to get both. I tried to think of an example, and the best I
could come up with on short notice was Devlin's Winter Wren II.
Peter
Hi Ferd, Welcome to the group.
You are building a fine boat, I had the plans for the Weekender and
the Vacationer, and wasn't able to make up my mind on which to build, So
I built a Bolger Micro. Now if we could get a boat with the Micro's room
and stability and the Vacationer's looks we would have the best of both
worlds! ;-)
Good Luck, and happy project, Stan, Snow Goose

The vacationer is a very nice boat. I know someone here in florida who had
one - tho' he ruined it by changing the plans and shortening the mainsail so
much that everyone referred to it as the slow boat from china. Steve Anderson

If you're building the Vacationer from Stevenson Projects, then
you'll want to check out the Back Yard Yacht Builders at
http://www.webcdi.com/cgi-bin/byyb_bbs.pl
That's the site where you'll find lots of other Vacationer builders
who are eager to share what they know.
BTW, I'm in St. Paul, Minnesota and am building the Weekender by
Stevenson.

Your first post came in loud and clear. I hope it won't be your last.

This is me again. I didn't get to finish my first message Could one of
you out there let me know if you are getting this message. The reason the
subject was Vacationer is that I am building it at this time( just starting)
I need to hone my skills so to speak before I start on my real boat the WDJ.
Ferdinand Schillberg Winnipeg Manitoba
P.S. I believe I am the only builder in
Winnipeg Thats kind of a lonely thought

Dear Ferdinand and welcome to the list! I am thrilled to hear that you also
will build the WDJ. Your posting reached Oslo 11 minutes after you sent it.
Not bad!
I hope to launch my WDJ this summer. I'll be glad to answer any questions
you might have.
