Chas Andrews Skimmer, now onsold

Tim & Flying Tadpole
I believe that Dave Carnell built and sailed an Otter II for a number
of years. You might email Dave and ask him about it. His website is
http://home.att.net/~DaveCarnelland his email address is listed
there.

Here are a couple of comments.

1. If there is a simularity, then Otter is a small Skimmer, rather than the
other way around. Skimmer was earlier.

2. Black Skimmer is one of Bolger's best loved designs with proven good
performance. Bolger wrote somewhere that Otter II did not work out well.
The boat was not stable enough and required ballast. He continued (at that
time) that he did not think that a cabin sharpie as short as 20 feet was
feasible.

3. Since Otter II, Bolger has designed a couple of other sharpies of
similar size: Wish II (30-odd boats) and the AS 19. You might want to check
them out. He expressed doubts about Wish II and I have never seen that any
have been built. Martha Jane is shorter than Black Skimmer, but not really
too much smaller and probably more intricate. It is another design with a
good reputation. If you want to be all inclusive, I suppose you should also
include Centennial II.

I don't have the source for the comments about Otter II at hand. It was
probably in Messing about in boats several years ago.

I have been looking at the plans for the Otter II (I think they are in
"Different Boats"). This 19'6" leeboarder with a cuddy looks like the
next step up for me from my Gypsy. I have the plans for the Single
Handed Schooner and had reached the decision to go ahead with that
design based on symplicity but it doesn't have a cuddy, no kick up
rudder and the heavly ballasted daggerboard looks like it has a pretty
deep draft (relatively speaking). On the plus side it looks very easy
to build, should be fast and does have very nice lines. I have also
just gone again to Payson's site and looked at the plans for Black
Skimmer. Literalty, this plan looks exactly like a scaled up Otter II.
Does anyone have any experience with either of these designs?
