[bolger] Re: Glouster Gull

David I don't know what the Gull looks like, but I have only built in stitch
and glue and have found the following hints that others have told and I have
found to work well.

use cable plastic cable ties to tie the ply together, much easier on your
fingers and cutting edges and you are able to apply much more pressure.

get a hot glue gun ,(just a cheapy from the hardware), very good for tacking
in bulkheas etc until you fillet the joint. it has no strength though so
only use what is necessary so that the epoxy can get in to do the job .I
have found this the absolute best tip I ever got saves a lot of unnecessary
holes.
I tacked the corner knees in my Nymph this way and can support the entire
boat by them.

If you can get a hot air gun use it to reshape sagged fillets BEFORE
GLASSING!!!
I was told this has no effect on the epoxy as it becomes stable after
setting, seems to be correct.
This is also a good way of cleaning up runs afterwards with a scraper, don't
overheat, just enough to push it around.

Thats all for now if I think of anything later I will let you know.

Good luck

The Light Scooner has stalled due to inclimate weather, so I've turn
my attention to building a Gull, (I can do this in my living room.)

I was lining out the mold stations on some 3/4 ply when it occurred
to me I could save a bit of ply if I cut the corner off the
trapazoids just below the point where the shear hit the molds. Can
anyone see a reason that this would be a BAD IDEA before I go ahead
and do it?

I also think I'd like to tack and tape this boat, but I only have
experience with fit and fasten. Any tips on approaching the Gull is
way would be greatly appreciated.

I'm building a ladder frame for the molds and making patterns for the
sides, so if any of you get out to Montauk, bring some ply and we'll
build you a Gull too.
