RE: [bolger] Re:skeg on june bug

I stand (or sit as the case may be) corrected.

According to the formula for calculating oar length that you just
posted, June Bug should use 6 foot oars. The maximum beam of June Bug
is 39 inches. If this is plugged into the formula we get:

(3.25 x 0.5 x 25) / 7 = 5.8

Round this up to 6 feet and you get the same answer as recommended by
Bolger in the plans.

Thanks to all who responded to my inquiry about rowing June Bug. I
think I will add a small skeg and see how I like it.

On another note I really want to change the leeboard arrangement,
I've already snapped one of the fingers that grab the gunwale when I
hit a rock at very low speed. I considered a Michalak style pivoting
leeboard when I was building the boat and now regret not going that
route. I changed the rudder from the original plans, it is very much
like the one used on Gypsy.

According to one oar length formula that I have seen and used for my PS #1,
6' oars would be too short.

Funny you should mention it, but our jb does much the same. when you
stop rowing ,it slows the n spins on the spot. with the rudder
slightly down its fine. I've made a small skeg and you've just
reminded me to fitit Oars are 8' and overlap when on the return
stroke. Acouple of lost knuckles soon remind you todo it right. At
the moment I must admit it is handy to be able to spin on the spot
and back into the shore so the ladies can disembark in a dignified
manner. I'll lat you know how it goes.
