Les,

I tried to look into Microboats on Yahoo and they said there is no such
group. This, after finding it in the listing. Hmmm.

Carron
All are welcome to discuss boats of any variety or design on
microboats. This new group is focused on small boat camping/cruising
but boat design and construction aspects are also welcome. I like
the bolger group because it is exactly about Phil Bolger, one of my
favorite subjects.

Wayne,
I for one would like to think that we are not so narrow minded that we can't
discuss the merits of any design.
Another group? I already belong to too many to keep track of and would not
join.

Well said.

I'm interested in this group because I just like
"Messing Around In Boats", and have found that Bolger
has shown a lot of different ideas on boats to "Mess Around" in.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't care whether the Bolger Group includes
similar boats or similar designers, or just other interesting boats. Just
as long as we talk about building and sailing boats. (i.e. leave the

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I would rather see the discussion here more
inclusive (as long as it moves along) rather than fragmented into competing
groups. For instance, I would have loved to hear about the Bolger Oldshoe,
but it unfortunately split off. But, I don't have the time to listen in to
half a dozen groups.

So, you guys continue to keeping it interesting and Machiavelli and I will
try to keep it streamlined.

P.S. Peter Lenihan, soley, will continue, as before, without restriction on
topic, because, 1. he is funny, and 2. he flatters the moderator.

My three cents' worth (only because everything in California costs more)....

Regarding the inclusion of Michalak designs.....we seem to be doing this
already and from my perspective, there hasn't been much of a negative
reaction. As a group, we seem to gravitate towards Bolger (obviously) and
Bolger-influenced designs. We could get into another one of those
protracted threads about which designers to include, exclude, and why. Good
grief. I'm fine with the status quo and I will probably talk occasionally
about the work of Sam Devlin, Tracy O'Brien, Dave Carnell, Pygmyboat and
Chesapeak Light Craft kayaks. All of which I have investigated and even
purchased plans and one kit. Anyone wishing to object to other designers and
designs being included, per the current practice, can do so, or have a
detailed discussion off line about that particular boat/designer, or do what
I do when the subject doesn't interest me, press "delete". Me, I'm loving
this format and its variety of Bolger and Bolger-influenced backyard boat
building.

Opps, I almost tripped steping off the soap box.

On the "schedule" today for PS #2 is mounting the bottom rub strips and
rolling the final hull coat. Seats and interior sanding, priming and
painting should be done by week's end. Gunwales, inwales, oar locks over
the week-end. Also working on a set of 7' closet pole oars.

There is another egroup here on Yahoo that is called boatbuilding
that has basically died in the last couple of months. It would seem
to be a place to discuss all designers. This Bolger group seems to
be the best group but I too would like to see all designers discussed.

Maybe if everyone that wants to discuss other designers' would join
the "boatbuilding" group, we could resurrect it.

I have no problem with discussions of square boats, or of Michalak's
designs, but please, let's not limit the discussion to ONLY square
boats. I know they work well and are easy to build, but they are . .
um, hard to be tactful here . . Ugly. IMHO, why should I spend all
that time and effort to build something ugly? The most interesting
part of Mr. Bolger's talent is that he can design both the Jessie
Cooper and the 23' fantail launch, surely one of the loveliest shapes
ever put on paper. Sometimes he even manages something easy to build
and beautiful too, like the Gypsy, or the Light Dory. The square
boats that have attracted the most attention are only a relatively
small part of his work.

Summary: Discussions of Bolger and similar thinking designers  might be
"officially" welcome.

I agree. Larry Henry, Palm Bay, Florida. Keep it to basically designers of
"Homemade" boats, but in the Bolger/Michalak veign and others of similar
types. I enjoy Bolger, have the utmost respect for him, but there are other
designers also worthy of respect as well, who have very nice and "easy" to
build boats, that deserve attention as well. Boat to the need i say. Keep it
basically "square boats" but open up a little. Perhaps we could call it the
"Square Boats Homebuilder's List"?
