RE: [bolger] Sand Blasting trailer

I can't say from experience yet but these folks (http://www.por15.com) have a product they claim will permanently stop rust on any surface you can coat with it.
Actually, to hear them talk about it it will take care of everything but your belly-button lint. I don't have an answer for reaching the inside surfaces, except possibly to try
chemically preping it with their products and then find some way to spray it or plug the channel and slosh the coating around inside.

Good luck,
Christopher Brand

P.S. The POR-15 was recommended to me by Tom Colvin, so I have reason to believe it will work. I will have more experience with it in a few months. Someone on the
list recently mentioned a big name company offering a polymeric isocyanate trailer paint (I think they were recommending it for use on the bottom of thier boat???), this
stuff is in the same chemical family.

Jim,

There is a product called POR-15 that can be painted directly over rust.
Wire brush the surface and paint over it. Stops rust. Can be sanded,
painted, epoxied, drilled, etc. after curing. Automobile restorers use it.

I've done the old trailer refinish routine and I wish I knew about POR-15
then. No, I don't sell the stuff, but I can probably get more info for you.

Back yard sand probably will just clog the gun, for blasting the sand has to
be clean and DRY. I would avoid blasting altogether, there are brush-on
products available that will "turn rust into primer" the brand I am familiar
with is Mar-Hide. Paint it on and it turns the rust black and hard, ready to
paint over, don't know how but it works. Try the local paint supplier that
the auto body shops use. They will should help you choose the right product
for your project.

Jim
I had my trailer sandblasted last season... I was going to do it myself
until I found out that I had to have a LARGE compressor to do it
properly... I have a 4 hpr 25 gallon compressor and I was told by the
people that sell them ( sears) that it would not be large enough to handle a
big sandblasting job... I am under the impression that it would have to run
allot to keep up with the blasting unit.. more volume of air not pressure
from what I understand... but what do I know!
I had a painting contractor sandblast it for me cost was 95$

Hi

I've got a non-galvanized, painted trailer, and will be looking at
repainting periodically. What did you do about the inside of the steel
pieces? Do they dribble rust stains or is it possible to clean and coat
them too?

Greetings,
Thanks for the many responses to my Michalak-Bolger thoughts. I agree, it ain't broke, keep sailing
the group as it is.
My querry: I am in the process of refurbing an ever-so-cute WWP14, and I must tackle the trailer and
mods (uniquely, this boat has a fixed keel - it is really as close to a Micro as plastic gets) and I
wonder if any of you have any experience with sand blasting as a means of getting the rust off the
trailer. I have an air compressor and a pile of sand in the back yard. With one of the inexpensive
sandblasting setups are we talking 2 hours to do a frame, or two days? It looks to be a painted steel
trailer - rusted from salt water, but structurally sound. Any experience with this in the group?
Thanks,jim@...
