[bolger] Re: Pirate Racer's Rig on Windsprint?
Windsprint Rigs:
I know I've been on record a few times saying the Windsprint rig is too big.
It really isn't that much of a problem, though as long as the user
exercises a little common sense.
The extra sail area is nice to have in light breezes. I have enjoyably
sailed solo under full sail in winds of up to 15-17mph. It is a big thrill
down wind in those conditions. Taking a reef in winds of 12-18mph is
suggested, however. With a single reef, you don't loose any speed upwind and
downwind suffers only at the deepest angles compared to full sail. The sail
area with a single reef is about right for most conditions under 20 mph. One
alternative would be to have a sail made of about the same size as the
reefed 114 sq footer (about 80 sq. feet.).
If strong winds really are a concern, put the little 60 square foot
leg'omutton Bolger uses on Teal, Brick, etc. on the boat. It will fit
perfectly on the mast as designed and should not affect the balance at all.
I don't think this is necessary unless you live in an area of constant high
winds over 20 mph. (Like my wife's parents in W. Texas where it blows 20-30
nearly every day.)
Briefly, my advice would be stick with the original rig and plan on reefing
when it does blow.

What do you guys thing about Pirate Racers's (p94 BWAOM) Rig on a Windsprint.
PR is shorter by 2 ft but the winds here on The Indian River can "get up" so
a smaller rig may be desired. Any Opinions?
