Re: Plywood 12-1/2 Model
Hi Mark!,
So this is how you keep busy!Fine job you've done there with the 12
1/2.........Betchya can't wait to dig into some bigger wood and do the
real one?!
Have you given up all hope for a MICRO? If you come through
Montréal again this summer,we can take mine out for some fine sailing
instead of the little puttzing around we did last summer.
Afterall, your new family will very much appreciate the advantages
afforded by such a cozy cabin as the MICROs' and judging by your very
fine work on the model Bolger 12 1/2,you would have great fun dressing
up a MICRO full size!
Continued success with your boating dreams and thanks for the great
pictures!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, just back from taking the shrink wrap off his MICRO and
getting all soft in the knees,on the shores of the St.Lawrence....(we
hit 18 degrees today and there is still ice in the basin!)

Oh, very nice! I saw a model of the plywood 12-1/2 in Dynamite
Payson's shop about a year and a half ago, and I was amazed at how
nice it looked. Not quite as nice-looking as the original, of
course, but there are few boats that are. Few boats of that size are
as difficult to build, either. VERY good idea about the keelbolts.
I look forward to seeing pictures of the full size version. Does
anyone know if one of these has been built yet?

Clap, Clap, Clap, Clap!
(The sound of one appreciative viewer.)
Also, kudos for PCB.
Peter
I've finally completed my model of Bolger's
Plywood 12-1/2 that I started back around Christmas!!
My earlier concerns
about the look of the chines have been removed and overall, I am very
pleased with the results and plan to progress onto the full size version one
day. Construction of the model followed the construction details on the
plans fairly closely (with some reduced framing where unnessary for the model)
and is made primarily of 3-ply 1/8" Meranti Plywood with Teak Spars and
Booms. Sail material is canvas for oil painting. I realised once I
made the rig that the 1/6 scale may have been a bit excessive, but it fit the
1/6 scale human model we had laying around the house and meant I didn't have to
use tweezers as clamps.
While definitely not in the 'Instant Boat'
category, none of the construction details seemed particularily tricky.
Definitely appears to be a lot easier to build than the Haven 12-1/2 and I
prefer the fixed keel. The only modifications I'll be considering will be
some minor modifications of the keel/backbone construction details (setting the
garboards into a rabbet instead of just an epoxy fillet and conventional
keelbolts instead of the edge bolting shown on the plans), and I'm going to have
a discussion with PB&F regarding increasing the sheer 1" or so and
reducing the cockpit coaming 1" for asthetic reasons only.
I put some photos of it in the Bolger2 group
files area (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bolger2/files/)under the Folder 'Plywood 12.5'. I've reduced the size of the photos to
640x480 to take up less valuable storage space. If anyone else is
considering the design and would like some JPG's with more detail just let me
know and I can send them by email off-list.
Regards,
Mark

what a treat to use that program over the one supplied with my Canon
