Re: [bolger] Re: Bobcat
Don, Peter and all,
The Turkey River is not as delicious as Peter makes it sound although it is
scenic. It is a small river in northeast Iowa that empties into the
Mississippi. While the Turkey is not large enough to sail a Micro or even a
Bobcat, the Mississippi has some beautiful reservoirs that look like they
should provide some great sailing.
I have to admit that Chris and Chip have established a high standard with
their completed Bobcats "Flynn's Folly" and "Red Rover". I have hopes that
my "Catnip" will soon follow in the same tradition.
There is something about a sailboat the brings out the poet in many of us,
especially Peter.
Jack Niewoehner, enjoying the beautiful images conjured up by Peter Lenihan,

Jack,
After seeing the wonderful photos of Chips'"RED ROVER" and Chris's
"FLYNNS' FOLLY" on the Payson site,I can only say(despite the MICRO
in
me!) that I hope you follow the same high standards these two fellows
have clearly established!!WOW!!
I recall seeing a BOBCAT kept on a mooring,in les îles de la
Madeleine at Havre aux Maison out in the Gulf of St.Lawrence and was
certainly impressed with all of her apparent size/volume!Again,seeing
one in"the flesh" brings new appreciation for sometimes deceptive
one dimensional pictures!
And just think;after thoroughly enjoying the entire building
process and experiencing that out-of-this-world high you will get
from
sailing the pants off your BOBCAT,you will be excellently equiped and
perfectly prepared for that
giddy,spine-tingling,knee-bending,neuro-transmitter flood that
accompanies all who build and sail a....... MICRO!!That's right,in
the
dark lonely hours of the night, you will be awakened by the nervous
haunting visions of yourself at the helm of a MICRO sailing off to
some distant uncharted shore secure in the thought of a well stocked
larder, suitable liquid refreshments and a warm dry bed which awaits
your presence at the end of the day in some cozy cove with nothing
more then the song of bullfrogs to tickle your ears and the soft glow
of the rising moon to sooth your sun beaten eyes.
Now,ain't that a happy thought!!:-D
Best of luck with your BOBCAT!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, recalling many a fine winters' dream,on the banks of

Don,
Perhaps it is the river that flows out of Gravy Lake and heads
South abit before taking a turn around the Potato Hills before
emptying into Cranberry Pond which in turn leaches out into the swamp
land out back of Broccoli Ville...........? ;-)

Chris and All,
I can imagine that seats inside the side decks would make the Bobcat pretty
crowded. Since I haven't sailed in or even seen a completed Bobcat, I think
I'll just build it as drawn and find out how I like it, although the hatch
does sound like a good idea.
Hey, if we keep this up, us Bobcatters will be contributing almost as much
to this group as the Micrologists and the Light Schoonerites.

hey Chip... the first year I mounted the motor on the transom off to one
side but I hindered the rudder ( in fact I chipped the bottom plate a couple
of times) so I mounted a piece of 3x3 ( walnut of course) on the port side
aft. The trolling motor mounts right there and I can lock it in one
position and use the rudder for steering... One note though, in order for
you to have any control with the motor running you have to have the center
board all the way down...( for me any way)
as far as strengthening the transom look at my pictures on the payson
site.... I cut and epoxied a 3/4 in piece of walnut on both sides of the
transom so the transom width at the top is 1 3/4 inch thick, and then
capped with a 1/2 piece of walnut on top to make the transom (gunnels?)
look like one piece of wood...
as far as the sail... I still think that the poly sail is great for
the money (cheap, fast, and works great).... but I was having a difficult
time sailing windward.. the cut of the sail rite sail ( which I sewn
together in about 6-8 hours) in unbelievable in how Folly points!!!!
if you are in Dayton we should meet sometime this summer at Eagle Creek
reservoir in Indianapolis and sail for a day!!! I sail there sometimes ...
it is small but it has a 10 horsepower limit and is mostly sail boats and
fishing craft.... great place to sail.
let me know!

Hi Chris, It's nice to talk to you again. I mentioned to Jack that I was
thinking of adding some fold down seating mainly because I've been wanting
to take my mom out with me this summer. I thought she'd have a more
enjoyable first time sailing experience if she could sit comfortably. I
think now I'll wait till I can take it out again. Then see if I think the
same about it. It would make things more cramped in the cockpit with more
seats. I like the idea of the access hatch aft of the mast patner. I was
just wondering where to put my battery for my motor. That sounds like the
perfect place. You mentioned you had trolling motor too. Did you mount it

hey Jack... this is Chris Flynn....(Flynn's Folly) .. Bill Courson ( the
bobcat builder from Canal Winchester Ohio.. on Payson's website) sent me a
picture of his seats that he added to his bobcat... they were just a couple
of 1x12's screwed to the rear seat on both sides of the cockpit that went up
to where the centerboard case starts... it looked a little crowded .... I
just sit on the side coamings and floor ... when I have a passenger they sit
on the deck in the front.. we always have plenty of room... to me it looks
like adding any seats would greatly hinder comfort .
As far as the mast, it is a piece of cake to put in place....one thing that
I did to Folly last summer was to cut a hatch in the center of the front
deck right behind the mast partner... it is an opening that I made a door
with a radius top for drainage just big enough to put the battery through
for my trolling motor.( I mounted a battery box there) it also adds a bunch
of accessible storage space .... anchor, extra line... boat cushions stuff
like that ... ( sorry I got carried away) I started to tell you with the
hatch opening I can see where the mast fits in the the partner easier.... I
will try to remember to take a picture next spring and e-mail it to you (
as the boat is in a friends barn for the winter)
Chris Flynn.... not having anything funny to say like Peter Lenihin. not far
from the frozen banks of the Wabash...... ( sorry I couldn't resist
hehehe)

Chip,
Tell me about your plans for extra seating. I have lots of ideas for my
Bobcat but since it isn't done yet and I've never seen a finished one, I
don't know what I can or can't do. I thought that you just mainly sat on
the floorboards or the side decks. I've also wondered about how hard it is
to put the mast in place. I assume that you do that while it is still on
the trailer.
I have the hull made, but not even decked yet. Right now the boat is on a
trailer next to my house and covered by a tarp. I would like to get the
mast and spars done this winter, but who knows. There are always so many
other things that have to get done. I'm self employed, so it seems like
there isn't much free time either.

How do you like the Bobcat? It's a little more complex than some of the
other instant boats, but looks nice. Do you have any pictures?
