The issue of availability (much like the lack of availability of the old
books) is one that has intrigued me tremendously. With the new designs and
whatnot, one would think that plans were in place to insure availability far
into the future. Now if I could just lay hands on a copy of the Folding

Welcome Stefan,
I too am an admirer of Sea Bird 86'. One dream of mine is to have a sturdy
little boat like Seabird to explore the still wild rivers, estuaries, and
sounds of the Georgia (SE USA) coastline. Shallow draft is a necessity as is
seaworthiness for occasional offshore runs and bar crossings. I was
intrigued enough by the idea that I wrote Bolger and inquired about the
plans. (I also expressed some concern about the dipping lug and asked about
his opinion of a conversion to a balanced lug based on Gary Blankenship's
experiences with his Bolger 30'er. Bolger addressed my concerns in his
reply.)
He had this to say about Seabird:
"Seabird '86 was meant for unlimited offshore use (given suitable equipment
and competent handling as with any boat). They are good sailers, buoyant and
dry in rough water and the ergonomics of the cabin are not bad. Very few
have been built, no doubt because of the rig, which is only suitable for
either straight-away passgemaking or for keeping a strong crew busy. We have
designed a sloop rig for the boat which would certainly be much handier but
more expensive, more in the way when not in use, and, most of the time, not
driving the boat so well. The sloop rig is gaff-headed and uses the same
mast as the dipping lug. The balanced lug conversion as in Gary
Blankenship's boat is also an option. The worst of dipping lugs these days
is that one gets onto a it's almost invariably with somebody who is prepared
to give up on it the moment there's a problem or inconvenience, devoting no
time to learning to use it."
The plans have not been purchased yet, but I feel like I ought to go ahead
and get them. Bolger is not a young man and I'm afraid that like many other
designers, their availability will cease upon his death.
I look forward to hearing about your Seabird and hope to live vicariously
through your experiences.
Best,

Hi,
As far as I know, nobody has built Seabird'86.
It may be of interest, though, that there are several new versions of this
design, with a higher cabin roof (like Micro Navigator) and at least two
possible sailing rigs (dipping lug, and gaff). I think they've been written
up in Messing Bout in Boats magazine, but can't remember when - over a year
ago, anyway.
