Re: oregon mast question

My Micro plans specify the glue line to run side to side. I'm not
sure how important the line direction is. In every destructive test
I've done on epoxied joints, the wood gave way, not the epoxy, so I
guess that an epoxied joint is not a weak point but a reinforced
point.

I always ran mine athwartships. The rationale was that
most of the bending was in the side to side direction
and I did not want the glue line to be subjected to a
lot of shear forces that would be present if it were
running fore and aft.

Whether or not my thinking is any good, well, let the
group decide. I *can be sold!

sorry to have started such an arguement. As a "producer of native
seeds from a semi arid area of the world i am painfully aware of the
lack of wood, lack of forests( western Australia has logged 95% of
its forests and yet they still argue over which bit to cut next. The
govt recently let e tender for wooden railway sleepers. Millions of
them.) Thank you for makingme aware of how precious my recycled wood
is. I'll try harder to save more.
Wehave a tree rot known as Jarrah dieback, which ,according to the
experts only affected Jarrah . The big company then took steps to
control its spread ,ie , ignored the problem. it now affects many
other species right into the cities .
Sorry to knock national geographic , but here goes. Inow pay for 11
pages of glossy ads (march 2001) they are all BIG Commpanies telling
us how wonderful there environmental programs are. bollocks ...
A recent set of stories aabout Australia were woeful reporting to
say the least they got my part of the country very wrong , so I'd
assume they make similar errors elswhere in the world.
Anyway back to boats. When I set up my mast which way should the
glue line run? fore and aft or side to side?
