Because the AS29 requires 55 sheets of 1/2in and you refer to this
number.
For the groups information, here in Queensland Australia boatbuilders
can buy top quality Pacific Maple 12mm (1/2inch) Marine Ply at BS
1088 standard for $A77 a sheet. 9mm (3/8in) is $A65, 6mm (1/4in) is
$A47 a sheet. This includes sales tax.
30 liters of epoxy (don't know gallons? anybody help) is $A430,
cheaper in bulk. this stuff is mixed by a gifted chemical engineer
who also makes an excellent one pack adhesive/filler called Purbond.
I use that in all my woodworking projects and repairs, beautiful
stuff.
The real expensive stuff Down Under is fittings, electronics, etc.
Anything that has to be manufactured past a basic level (as Australia
has almost nil industry anymore). This all comes in from USA or Japan
or Europe at a very expensive price - note the Aussie dollar can only
buy 50c US - but our wages are similar.
sorry for the long rant, but any information is welcome. Thanks Jean,
and good luck mate.

LMII requires more like one hundred sheets of plywood, I'm afraid,
unless you leave out the interior furnishings. You'll also need at
least 150 square yards of fiberglass (more if you double the bottom)
and an ungodly quantity of epoxy. The pivoting mast, which is 10" in
diameter and *must* be built of sitka spruce (aluminum? carbon fiber?)
to keep the counterweight within reason, costs quite a wad all by
itself.
As I recall, Bob Archbald's Wizard, professionally built in the
southeastern US to this design, had US$30,000 worth of materials in
her, plus more than US$70,000 in labor. That was using high quality
marine plywood, bronze fastened, and yacht finished, of course. I
think US$30,000 is what he sold her for, barely used. Resale value is
a hidden cost of any unconventional design,

Hmph. damn exchange rates!
I've looked through BWAOM and tallied up in my head what I think it
would take, around 70 sheets of 1/2", probably 30-50 gallons of epoxy?
Anyhoo, I'm writing to Mr.Bolger so I might order a set of LM plans

Anyhoo, I'm writing to Mr.Bolger so I might order a set of LM plans

Without the plans at hand, I can only estimate the bill of materials
for an AS39/LM2.
Can someone out there help? My old man wants to build this to retire
on, and needs some sort of building estimate - not costs, as they
vary country to country, state to state, but totals of 1/2" marine
ply, epoxy, paint, stuff like that?
I remember reading that the AS29 uses 55 sheets of 1/2" and 2 sheets
of 1/4".
