[bolger] Re: [bolger] Re: Seabird ´86, who knows...

Seabird 86' is more like "Chebacco" than "Martha Jane". It is definitely not
a "square boat". You can find a pretty good description of it in "Boats With
an Open Mind".

She is a 23' LOA flush decked cruiser with a double chined hull. It
resembles a husky scale-up of boats like Gypsy and Cartopper. It has a
shallow, full keel and a centerline mounted outboard. The rig is a large
dipping lug on a tabernacled mast. It has a rather spartan cabin with a low
narrow bench around the main compartment (I hesitate to call it a "saloon")
with room for two pipe berths and a small table. Forward there is small
compartment with space for a portable toilet and a large hatch overhead for
handling ground tackle stored in the bow well.. Aft there is a good sized
self draining cockpit with room for 4-5. She's supposed to be motorsailer
rather than a pure sailboat, but I'd bet she'll acquit herself quite well
under sail alone.

There apparently was a column updating Seabird 86 in a recent issue of MAIB.
If someone could send me a copy of that article, I'd be in your debt.

The boat really is a favorite of mine. It doesn't look like it's too
complicated for the amateur builder, but building a 3,000 LB plus boat is a
major project no matter how you look at it. Like Chuck Merrell said a few
weeks ago, most people will only build large boats like that in their
imaginations, myself included. I'm glad there's someone here who's got the
chutzpah to take on such a project. I hope Stefan stays with us a while to
inspire all of us dreamers. One day I hope to cross the threshold from
dreamer to doer and start a big project, maybe even Sea Bird 86, but until
then I'll have to be satisfied building and playing with my little boats
real and imaginary.

Best,
