[bolger] Re: Sail balance (non Bolger boat !)

I don't know the shape of your rudder, but what about top and bottom plates, or at least a bottom plate. I saw an Egret at the WoodenBoat Show, last summer, which had a rudder which looked like a piece of "I Beam". It actually had top and bottom plates of plywood and one of the owners said it had a tremendous effect on handling.

How about a bigger and better rudder?

Hello List

This is a bit off topic but I'd appreciate your views

My boat is an enlarged (12.5%) version of WoodenBoats 21' double-ender byJ.G. Alden. This makes her 24'loa x 21'lwl x 8' beam x 3'6". She has a"modernised" bermudian sloop rig that was designed for the enlarged boat bya N.A. The main is batterned and is 270 square feet (25.19 m2) on a boom of17' (5.0m) The jib is 80 square feet ( 7.36 m2) and is on a short bowsprit(contrary to the original design).

With the wind forward of beam she sails like a witch, and we recently won
the keeler class (on handicap) of our local ocean race. The race was a beat
the whole way. Balance on this point of sail is fine, with just the
slightest weather helm, wether under full sail or even fully reefed in 30
knots of wind.

As soon as the wind is aft of midships she becomes a holy terror, griping
(wanting to round up) badly. In more than 20 knots it is impossible to hold
a course even double reefed. To run off the main needs to be stowed.

My advisors want to chop the foot of the main and shorten the boom but I am reluctant to do this as she balances so well to windward, and even reefing (which is effectivelty reducing the foot) doesn't seem to work. I will be fitting a boom vang to reduce twist.

What else should I be considering, is there something basic here that I'm
missing??

Thanks
