Re: [bolger] Re: metric vs feet and inches...seriously OT
I have been very quiet on this one (me quiet!?!). Until now. this discussion has gone on for quite
a while, and I for one think units of measure are rather arbitrary. whether it is 1429 mm or .78139
fathoms, who cares, it is still the same measure, same boat, whatever. I can work with any units, if
i have compatible equipment. if my tape measure and all my measuring tools and plans etc. were in
fraques and friques, and there are 2.4 friques in a fraque, i would be fine with it. Metric is more
logical, but only to the degree that our world uses mostly base ten numbering system. there are some
good arguments for using other number bases. my work boots are exactly 12" heel to toe, that counts
for something too, to me :-)
not that i have more say than anyone else, but my vote it for back to boat stuff, i for one love to
lurk and read about other peoples adventures :-)

As one who uses dimensions all day, thank God for metric conversion
in NZ.

those dimensions above are no more a part of the FPS system than are cubits.
the system consists of units of length, weight, and time, which are feet,
pounds, and seconds, plus the sub-and super-derivatives of those.
All the other dimensions are only fun at this date. In the process of having
fun one time while driving between the laboratories at Oak Ridge, I authored
the off the cuff dimension "newton meters per acre second squared". Later we
worked it out that this is a valid dimension :-) What fun!!! Nearly any
preposterous dimension is possible
