Re: [bolger] Teal, Elegant Punt, Crab Skiff, Junebug, and Gypsy sails

I just checked and the sailrite kit is $130 for white.

I've had my Bohndell sail for about eighteen years now, and have been
thoroughly satisfied with its shape, materials, workmanship, and
price.

Chris Noto.
I just looked at my email archives related to my Junebug (below).
$109 is correct but it was two years ago and it did not include the
sail bag. Oh well, I guess prices rise.....

Thought about that, they show the Gypsy sail at $121. Others boats,
SAME SAIL, they show $161.

Didn't try the custom route. May try that, and see what the price
comes to.

My experience was different. I bought a 66 sq.ft. sail
for my modified June Bug from Sailrite as a kit, got
reef points and a sail bag for $109 last year, and the
boat sails quite well. Since it was custom, they
had to start from scratch and it took less than two
weeks to receive. They are great to do business with
and they take plastic.

I am going to modify my Teal for rowing only. I have spars, dagger
board, rudder and white sail available. The sail has been used once
and is spotless. I will sell the sail for a $25 discount from Mr
Payson's price. The other parts are negotiable. I am located in
northwestern lower Michigan near Traverse City. I also have a
Herreshoff Nereia Pram for sale. The price for the pram is also
negotiable. I have a Penguin which is becoming compost in my yard.
The
spars, rudder and sail are usable. The centerboard could probably be
salvaged if one had a use for it. The sail could probably be modified
for use with one of the Bolger boxes.

H.H. Payson sells a sail for these boats, here is the site

Dynamite Payson, definitely, unless you're into Tyvek and carpet
tape. Good sails, made by Bohndell, generally in stock, for very
reasonable prices. See:
http://www.instantboats.com/pricetxt.html#sails
I just ordered a standard white one for $175, and it came in a week.
Payson's a great guy, although you have to send him a check; he
doesn't take plastic or online orders.

If you wanted changes, (reef points, for example) you could contact
Bohndell directly.

I made the entire suit of sail for my light scooner by cutting down
cast off and and used up sails off bigger boats.

Now granted I can't compare how my boat sails to a scooner with
"real" sails, but for $25 in carpet tape and grommets plus the
pleasure of doing myself on the cheap (isn't that half the fun?) I'd
never do anything else. I might even sew the edges one of these days.

BTW: She sails great. With a 3 man crew she planes easily off the
wind, and points well enough to get home!

YIBB,

David

I'll second Bohndell. They are an old firm, and do quite a lot of stuff.
The Bolger sized sail is just a small piece of what they do. I got my
Teal's sail from them, and seeing it, and damn glad I didn't go with
Sailrite, simply because it was (1) really well done, (2) cheaper than
Sailrite's kit, and (3) done in a few days, from ordering to sailing.

Bohndell did not take charge cards when I bought from them.
The best and probably least expensive route is either
from Payson or his supplier Bohndell. It is a stock
item for them, so the cost is quite low - less than
$200 last time I checked. You can't buy a Sailrite kit
for that.

I bought my Windsprint sail from Bohndell. It was very
nice and quite inexpensive compared to quotes from
other sailmakers who would have to start from scratch.

Doesn't Payson sell it? (www.instantboats.com) I think that's where the sail on our Brick came from, and it's a nice sail (and the same design as on all those other boats you mention, I think)

Anybody know a good source for this sail?
