Re: Starting myTennessee

I will be using all 3/8" ACX plywood. The local lumber yard had some
nice exterior glue, G1S pieces ($15.69/ea.). I'll epoxy saturate all
the exterior with 3.75 oz. T. glass from the rub rail down. RAKA
suggested the 3.75T because it's very strong but a bit harder to wet
out so I'll try and glass the sides flat on saw horses before
assembly. Above the rub rail I'm thinking of adding a layer of
Mahogany door skins for the old wooden boat look, otherwise I'll
glass that also to keep it from checking.

I will coat the inside with epoxy only where it's exposed to weather
as it's very dry here in Colorado, USA and she'll live on a trailer
covered 99% of the time. With an average humidity of less than 35%
year around, mildew and rot is not common. I'll just give everthing
else several coats of a good preservative/water proofing and paint.

The Tennesse has no chines to tape. It's a vertical sided boat with
external rub rails along the bottom. The bottom glass will protect
the plywood edges at the chine.

This should be a significantly easier boat to build than the Michalak
Frolic I put together. ( a little sister to Chuck Lienwebers
Caprice) Other than 10' bigger it's a straight forward project. (I
hope!)

What kind of plywood? Are you going to "epoxy satuate,"
cover with cloth, just tape chines???

Inquirering minds want to know!

Good Luck!

Please keep us informed. I hope you take a bunch of pictures and post
them. I'm very interested in how Bolger's big plywood boats go together.

Good luck. I hope it is more fun and goes faster than you hope.

I've been watching this group for over year now and staying quiet but
digesting a lot of good information. Just thought I'd let everyone
know that I'll be starting my Tennessee this weekend. I hope to have
it done by next season.

This is my third but largest project. Previously I built a canoe and
a 20' Michalak Frolic. My wife and I decided we wanted a motor
cruiser for the relaxed side of life so the Tennessee has been
decided upon.

Thanks to Chuck Lienweber the sharing of his experience with his
Tennessee. I've decided to keep it as Bolger designed except for a
windshield. I figure the designer knows his stuff a lot better than I
do.

Epoxy from RAKA should be here this week and the plywood will be
bought tomorrow.

I'm sure I'll be posting some questions too.
