Re: AF4 progress

Why drill pilot holes? Try screws without them. I only drill pilot
holes where there is a chance of splitting, near the end of a board,
or where the "top" piece is quite thick, a lot thicker than the non-
threaded portion of the screw.

Generaly, the "top" piece will slip on the unthreaded portion, and
the two pieces will clamp together.

All the longitudinal parts of my AF2 were clamped together with
drywall screws, with no predrilling. I mostly backed the screws out
and filled the holes. Some places, inside the cabin roof for example,
I just hit the protruding bits with a grinder, and left the screws
in.

My AF4 is moving forward nicely. As of last night, I
got all the longitundal bits attached to the boat,
gunwales, deck clamps, and chine logs. All the above
the waterline stuff was bedded in PL Premium and the
below waterline bits in 3M 5200. The one conclusion
I've reached in this process is that screws are a pain
in the neck compared to nails. It's one heck of a lot
faster and easier to drive ring nails that it is to
drill pilot holes and drive screws. Especially when
the thing you are trying to attach is covered in glue!

With any luck, I'll get the bottom on this weekend.

Pictures to come soon.

JB in Georgia.
