I'm pulling solo dad duty this weekend, and that precludes any
scooning, even under foresail alone. So late yesterday afternoon
Margaret Ellen (the daughter) went for a nice long row in the teal
"lil'winnie"

We headed out on the nearly dead calm, oil smooth lake, aiming for a
pair of sloops rafted up a distance away. Margaret official station
is in the little triangle behind the after thwart, she braces herself
neatly with her hips wedged into the stern and her hands on the cross
piece and doesn't mind too much when my clumsy oar stroke splash
water into her face.

Most of my rowing in lil'winnie has been restricted to desperately
clawing through the surf zone to go fishing. Between the heaving
swells and flogging sail and oars jumping out of there locks, I never
really got a good feel for how she pulled; and never imagined I'd
ever want to cover any distance using my back.

I couldn't have been more wrong.

In the smooth conditions we glided along smartly, making the sloops
sooner than I expect. On the return trip Margaret discovered the
simple, irresistible pleasure of dragging her hand in the water. When
not doing that, she shouted orders like a coc'swain (sp?) As we
neared shore our Newfoundland Roxane swam out to meet us, and
Margaret thought this was hilarious.

Is there a greater pleasure than enjoying an afternoon in a boat of
your own making? If there is, surely it will get you arrested.

YIBB,

David
