issue of misuse of intellectual property involved in building the
boat from the plans in the book. The entire plan with step by step
instructions is printed and there is no caution about buying building
rights.
On the other hand, Bolger clearly had a lot to say the was included
with the book that you wouldn't get even if you bought all the plans
one by one. So it was not "just" a discounted way of buying lots of
plans.
I bought the plans from Bolger when I had my CJ built. The only
reason to buy a set is for the (very great) convenience of being able
to lay a rule on the plans to measure this or that. And of course,
wear and tear on a book now worth several times its purchase price on
the used book market.
PEter
It never occured to me to buy the plans for Cynthia J. I'm just
building it straight out of "The folding schooner" since it comes
complete with instructions. I have finished the hull and am working on
the mast step at the moment. Was I wrong or can I assume that the book
was just a discounted way of buying lots of plans? I'm planning on
building a rowing only version of Teal when I finish Cynthia J.

I got a similar response when I took my version of Lily to Wooden Boat Show. If not built exactly as
his, it puts forth a bad image, and they received no interest or inquiries as a result. Probably a
thousand people looked inside and at the drawings and pictures. I think that the mass of wiring and
$3000 building cost discouraged most and not the lack of chrome headlight and center console, but I
don't think we should let one sour note or bad day discourage us from continuing to communicate.Clyde
(inveterate changer of design plans, Some may have seen my ugly foam "brick at St Michaels last fall.
It has now been cut lengthwise to form something of a skimmer, and I think the resulting lower half
will make an interesting abreviated brick sailer, when I get a little more time.)

Larry,
yeah, the Wharram versus PCA saga had some points in common with my
one (which I kept mostly private up to now). Among the other things,
I've also been accused of "gaining in publicity for myself"... I'm
not kidding. Luckily enough I don't sell anything - I have just spent
money and time on my web site for nothing other than personal
pleasure - otherwise I could have entered a legal dispute...
Really, "sic stantibus rebus" I can't imagine putting up again a site
ment to support a design like Micro (by the way, did you ever noticed
how boxy it is? just kidding now!), when the designer behaves in such
a way.
"Outside the box", you say. Maybe. I realize there are much more
famous designers around who don't show, to my knowledge,
such "excess" of personality. I'd name two, who have designed
beautiful boats for amateurs: Bruce Kirby (of Laser fame) who
designed the Norwalk Islands Sharpies, and the late J-J Herbulot, who
designed too many boats to list here: Vaurien, Caravelle, Corsaire
and Mosquetaire are the most famous ones in Europe, and have been
built by the thousands, and are still being built by amateurs and
professionals...

I have made the offer to PCB&F, a couple of times, to do their site
for them for a percentage of sales. The last response was that they

In PCB&F's case, the problem is there is a void they have failed to
fill on the internet for their product. Since they have failed to
fill that void themselves, legions of admirers have done so for them.
And when the find the admirer's efforts to be a nuisance, they
reprimand them for it! Shame!
Had they set up a rudimentary commerce site to dispense basic
information on a catalog of 20-30 stock plans, give pricing for same,
set up the ground rules and a fee schedule for consultation, and they
would not have to have so much "unprofitable correspondence." A savvy
marketer might look at all the interest as a potential new revenue
stream and seek to capitalize on it.

Really? Goodness me, I didn't realize there was anything
controversial about your site at all. I hope L.A. Dunton and C. W.
Morgan don't object to the pictures of their namesake vessels that we
posted there.
It is especially interesting that PCB&F should cop that kind of
attitude given PCB's oft-mentioned views of personal responsibility
and non-interventionist government. SA is evidently much more
protective of the firm, and possibly (appropriately, I suppose) of
PCB.

Pippo,
Put your site back up. Either delete the link to CSB/CSD or put
a disclaimer explaining that PCB&F should not be contacted regarding
plans bought form CSB/CSD. If PCB&F are unhappy with purchasers going
to CSD/CSB for plans, it's THEIR fault for not putting up their own
web-site. They've registered just about every combination of their
name already. They're all "under construction". If they'd realize
that every design PB has drawn doesn't have to be there from the
start, just the more well known boats. The others can be added over
time. If they'd have done that a couple of years ago, probably most
if not all of the 600 + designs would be "on-line". Why go through
the hassle of either fax or snail-mail with PCB&F, when you can order
from CSD/CSB with a few mouse clicks.

Pippo:
I agree with Pete and several others who have requested that you renew your
site. On my site, I try to be fair to everyone, but I still get letters from
designers complaining about the way they are represented. PCB&F won't even
talk to me. I figure that I do the site for the surfers, not the designers.
Personally, I think you should tell the Bolgers that you will sell them
editorial control of your site for a fee, and if they are not willing to
pay, you just do it your way. Don't let them bully you around.
Chuck, who is sorry to be beating around the bush so early in the morning.

Thanks for the update. I still think they are hurting themselves,
but I guess that is their perogative. I can see where they might not
like a link to CSD, but as I said before, their issues with CSD
should be between them and CSD or between them CSD and a judge.
Maybe they just don't like to go to court, but it seems more likely
that they don't have a case they can win.
I would have left the site up, but that is your perogative. I might
have removed the CSD link depending on how nicely I was asked and how
good a case they made.
I hope you eventually get around to finishing your Micro. It would
be a shame to let this spoil the project for you.
Regardless of all of this, your site is missed.

I used to think so in good faith, however let me quote again
PCB's "sentence" on my site, which "has generated nothing but
unprofitable - in every sense - correspondence for [them]". His
(their) reaction had nothing to do with anything else than my link to
CSD/CSB. They've clearly changed their minds, because if you go back
about one year in this very list, you'll find a message from PCB&F
thanking me for my web page. Well, that's it. I've cooled down in the
meantime, so I thought it appropriate to let the list know.

Mr Bolger has a right to not provide support for plans purchased from
CSD, but I think he "cuts his nose off to spite his face" when he
comes down of folks who bought the plans in good faith from CSD. I
neither know nor want to know the full details, but he ought to have
CSD in court, if he has a case, rather than brow beating folks who
bought plans from CSD.
Either way the good will of customers and potential customers is of
great value to anyone who wants to stay in business. Creating bad
will with customers does no good. They aren't to blame for
his "issues" with CSD. If he were to treat folks well he would
likely get business from them in the future. Heck they might even
send him a check in some cases.
I guess I am on PCB's S list now. Oh well, I had to say what I
thought.

Oh well, I had to say what I
thought.

Uhm, well, the server on which my web page is located is a commercial
one, nothing to do with my Agency's one...

You'd better avoid it, because you're probably as liable as I am in
producing "nothing but unprofitable -in every sense- correspondence
for [PCB&F]". You don't link to CSD though, so that's maybe the very
reason why you've been spared...

Prague, Vienna and Budapest are pretty young with respect to the
Italian cities...

Thanks. Cheers, Pippo
Pippo,
So that's what happened! I thought that you were working on top
secret satellite research and the Italian Government forced a shut down
on their server!
I have had not had a discussion with Bolger regarding my Micro
(plans purchased about 13 years ago from Bernie W.) but I should
perhaps avoid it.
Progress on Firefly is slow but steady, I hope to do a serious
amount of glassing and epoxying this weekend in hopes that interior
work can begin next week. The keel is complete and I hope to glass the
keel sheathing as well this week or next. Time is a precious
commodity.
I just returned from my trip to Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. I
was struck by the age of everything. We have nothing so old in the
States. Budapest is a pretty good jazz city! Not too many boats other
than the barges on the Danube (it is not blue).
Excellent drumming on the files you sent!

Hi there, and thanks for your interest! I've been reading the posts
in the background for all the past months. In sparse order, here's
how I'm doing:
1) Life is ok, family is doing great, the children grow up at the
speed of light, work is a bit stressful.
2) I'm currently devoting all my spare time to my other "important"
hobby, i.e. playing drums. The band (a jazz octet) in which I'm
playing now is doing quite well and we're doing several gigs with a
good success.
3) As a few of you know, I recently purchased a used boat (a 16'
fiberglass sloop centerboarder called Scout)which I'm rerigging right
now to get it ready for the summer. I'll replace the forestay next
week, and it's done.
4) No way I'm going to put my Micro pages back on. As many already
know, I entered a totally unexpected, extremely disturbing discussion
with Phil Bolger himself, which eventually convinced me to remove my
site and to suspend boatbuilding to cool down.
Thank you all, and best
Pippo
P.S.: since somebody asked, those "good things" about the imperial
system were posted on George Buehler's web site.
