Well, I make the boat decisions around my castle, and my
wife said I could say that!

In the mean time, keep us posted on possible Tenn. Messabout
progress, but don't make it the 3rd Sat. in August, as that is
when the local antique outboard motor meet is.

By the way, what trailer are you going to put your AF4
on? I figured out a cheap way to buy a new trailer.
I ordered one through my local dealer, and by driving to
the factory (only about 180 miles away from here) and
picking it up myself, along with two other trailers
for his stock stacked on top of mine, I was able to buy
a new, galvanized 1200 lb trailer for $430.00, which is
cheap around here. Since this particular factory was
only about 15 miles from where my retired parents live,
I conbined a trailer-pick-up trip with an overnight visit
to the folks.

As for picking up good deals on used marine equipment, I
always buy something that looks usefull even if I do not
have an immediate need for it. The Perko switch panel
was purchased at a boat dealer going-out-of-business
auction back in May 1994. Of course, I have one big pile
of marine crap in the basement, awaiting a use! The
retangular cabin lights (second set of cabin lights I
have had in this boat) were new-in-the-package, with
$19.25 price tags on them- purchased at another dealer's
"spring-cleaning sale" for $5.00 each.

Locking forward to more Pic's of your boat!

Thanks for posting the pictures, Max. You work pretty fast. I just wish I
had your ability to scrounge up good stuff as well as you do.
As for "falling apart, sinking, or rotting out", you'll probably be waiting
a long time before you build the next one. A lot of 'disposable' boats
aren't all that short lived despite being constructed out of inferior
materials. Unless you let it fill with rainwater and rotting leaves, it is
going to be tough to get it to rot out. That or leave it in the water all
the time. Trailered and covered, just about anything will last a long, long,
time. Maybe even too long! The problem with this is that we have to have
some sort of obsolescence for our wives to let us start *another* boat. My
personal navy is starting to get out of hand again like it did when I was
seriously kayaking. And there's still the spars, keel, and sails for a Micro
yet to be built. I may have to compost my Sportdory so I can get started on
the Micro. So Max, if you want a new boat, the time start letting this one
go to pot is NOW!
I'll get some pictures up soon, maybe even this afternoon.

As much as I'd like too, I'm afraid I can't make it. Other plans have come
up that preclude my going. The only good thing about those plans is that I'm
going to be picking up a sailboat. The boat is a Starfish, a design pulled
from a mold somebody splashed off a Sunfish. Other than some minor
alterations to the deck they are identical. It is a heck of a lot of fun in
20-25 mph winds, let me tell you.
It's going to be nice to have a sailboat again. The last time I went sailing
was in your Bobcat last year! My plans for the rest of the summer are to
spend as many days on the lake as possible in the AF4 with the sailboat tied
alongside to be used for short explores and to start teaching my daughter
how to sail.

John --

I had a similar heartwarming experience with my 3 1/2 year old
daughter this weekend. We went to a children's science museum, where
one of the exhibits was a series of big weights, to be hoisted by
varying ratios of block-and-tackles. So she goes right up to one of
the ropes, starts hauling away, and shouts out, "Raise the MAINSAIL!"

I nearly swooned.

All best,
Garth
As I have said before, the AF4 is just about the best choice
I know of for a 18 ft, overnight-able power skiff. Easy, quick,
and cheap to build, and doesn't need much power.

I have tuned-up a 1956 10hp Johnson that I had laying around,
test-ran it in the barrel, and have mounted it on my AF4,
and will be running that @ Rend Lake. Will probably bring
along the old 18, just in case.

I have posted photos of my wooden slot cover and my
electric system over in microboats.

When my AF4 rots out, falls apart, or sinks (due to cheap
materials used in construction), I will replace it
with either a Skiff America 20 or the larger-version
of AF4 (plans due out this winter.) A little extra room
would be nice, but as I usually boat alone, the 18
footer seems to be plenty adequate for now.

Post some photos, John!

It's been a good boating and boatbuilding weekend. As the subject line says
my AF4 is just about complete. I got the deck on her today. All that remain
are a few minor details like installing the slop well deck, putting on
bottom skids, and fastening down the slot-top coaming. Oh, and the painting.
The best part of all this has been watching my wife getting more and more
excited as this one comes together. For once, it looks like I picked the
right boat.

We took our Sportdory out to our Church picnic on Sunday. I was just about
worn slap out from taking all the kids for boat rides! My daughter Alison
(4) was the best passenger, though. She acted out some great sea-voyaging
make-believe as we rowed along; mostly about getting chased by sharks and
sighting pirates and discovering strange new worlds. A regular Amazon, what
father wouldn't be proud?

Best to you all.
