Re: [bolger] Edey & Duff Stonehorse

Not too far off topic, PCB did a sequel called Stone Camel but I don't think it was ever built. Clyde

Thanks Larry for the Stone Horse info, and to John Bell for the Stone
Camel info. It's amazing how much PB has designed. Not that I'll get
one any time soon, but always on the lookout for the nex one :)
Of course if I hit lotto ...

Thanks,
Paul

Paul,
I've scanned a couple of pages from the Stone Horse brochure and
posted it to my web site -- since it's not Bolger I didn't think I
should use our disk space. I'll keep the pictures up for a couple of
weeks.

They're at:
http://home.internetcds.com/~lgbarker/Stonehorse/

I've always liked the boat but it didn't fit our location or family
size.

When someone asks about a Bolger boat for which home-building plans
are not available, I always start wondering what available plan would
be the best substitute. In this case, you could consider:

1) Sea Bird '86
2) Triple Keel Sloop
3) The Bolger revision of the Folkboat done for Small Boat Journal.
This is probably the closest, but I'm not sure plans are available
for this one either.
4) Newfoundlander Catboat. (Personal favorite of mine)
5) Nahant - dory derived 25' sloop from Small Boats.
6) Leeboard catboat

Plenty to choose from in this case.

The story of the name "Stone Camel" paraphrased from the article.

Stone Horse is a succesful 23' Sam Crocker design rendered in fiberglass by
Edey and Duff. Peter Duff and Mait Edey were considering making a larger
boat on the same them. They met for dinner several times with PCB where they
bounced ideas off of each other. While the process was harmonious, they
joked about the aesthetic hazards of designing as a group: "A camel is a
horse designed by committee" was the old saw. So naturally the name for the
work in progress became Stone Camel. They never came up with a marketable
name, nor did the boat progress beyond a partial plug before it was
abandoned.

It was reprised in MAIB 18:6 (August 1, 200).

According to the letter I got in the mail today, it's in
Boat Design Quarterly's Issue #20.

These can be had for $8 by writing to Mike O'Brien in Brooklin, ME.
Maybe someone else has his address--mine is not available.

I have data convincingly disconfirming the Duhem-Quine hypothesis.
Am I to infer that Bolger was inspired by the Stone Horse to come up
with the Stone Camel? Or is this some cooincidence. At least it
sounds like they're having a good time when they get together ;)

If anyone comes up with an issue number, please let us know.

Thanks,
Paul

I remember seeing an article comparing the original Stone Horse to
Bolger's pastiche Stone Camel, I think in that Woodenboat book that
has short articles on 100 designs (not one of the variously numbered
plans catalogs).

Maybe we could bring that one into the thread to bring this back on
topic? ;-)

Personally, I'll go for Bolger's Seabird '86 if I wanted a full-keel
cruiser, or one of George Buehler's old-fashioned, boilerplate
designs.

Good luck!

-Hi Kayaker, I don't have any links to a Stonehorse site however I
have the brochure or should I say essay that Edey and Duff used to
send out concerning the Stonehorse. I would be glad to send it to you
for your perusal but eventually I would like to get it back. I Believe
Small Boat Journal had a writeup for the Stonehorse. I will research
that and let you know.

I know its not a Bolger design, but does anyone have any good links
(pics or drawings) to a Stone Horse site? I've seen a couple of small
pics and found one for sale at

http://www.classicyachts.com/brk_stonehorse.htm

but this is probably the best pic I've found, which is just so small.

Thanks,
Paul
