[bolger] Re: Polytarp
Leander,
I'm just this minute making my second polytarp sail. I think they're great.
I believe Jim Michalak has the most info in one place about them. (his site
is on my link page below)
My first one was a 25 ft flat sprit sail. This one is a 113 ft balanced lug
with darts. I use colored tarps available at walmart and ace hardwares. I've
even found white at a local flea market. The Polysail site sells good
quality white material. I guess I prefer they not scream polytarp so I avoid
gray and blue. I use double stick fiberglass reinforced outdoor carpet tape.
I just found out making these darts today that I can apply the carpet tape
to scraps of tarp, then trim with a fabric cutter (razor sharp "pizza" wheel
cutter from fabric stores) making tape that blends right in. (this may be
the long way around if you don't mind duct tape on gray tarp;~)
Let you know how this one turns out.
