During a slander/libel suit, the american painter Whistler was asked
how long it took to paint each of his "Nocturns," (which were the
subject of unkind words from the critic John Ruskin.

"Five minutes," Whistler replied.

"Do you mean to say you are asking [insert ridiculous sum of money]
for five minutes work?" asked the lawyer.

"No, I am asking it for a lifetime of experience."

Whistler won the suit, and was award damages in the amount of one cent.

It's hard enough for a layman to understand why it is stealing when
he copies tapes for his friends, let alone why making why building
multiple hulls from one set of plans would (legally) require
additional payment to the designer.

I haven't been in the intellectual property business that long, but
what I've come to believe is that people will only acknowledge the
worth of photos, music, words, boat plans, etc. if they *have to* pay
for them. If they can get the benefit without paying the money, that
is virtually the definition of "worthlessness."

That said, what is the deal with the instant boat books? I've been
cooking up a scheme to put my teal sail on a Zypher hull, (I won't
bother tell you why.) Is a check due when I buy the lumber, launch
the boat, sell it, or not at all?

I stand corrected. I guess I live a sheltered life. I guess I am guilty
too-- I have been "evaluating" my copy of Netscape for a long time now.
I still wouldn't feel right buying plans from a distributer who didn't
pay the royalties he agreed to pay. But would I build a Teal from
borrowed plans? Hmm... I don't know.
