RE: [bolger] Bumper Material for Dinghies?
I plan to use wacky noodles split to fit over the gunwales and lashed on
with spiral lacing through tiny holes in the sides, under the gunwales.
Haven't done it yet, so don't know if it will work!

I need to do something to pad my dinghy so it doesn't bang up my
boat. The dinghy is a nymph. The boat is a glass sailboat (C22).
I think some garden hose screwed all the way around the top might
work. Anybody tried that?
Any other effective low cost (or medium cost) solutions? Most of the
solutions I see in the catalogs would cost as much as the whole nymph
did.

To cushion the side rails on my Nymph, I found an old fire hose discarded by
our fire station. The hose has rubber on the inside, and canvas on the
outside.I cut the hose in half lengthwise, then wrapped it around the rails.
I secured it in place with stainless steel screws and finishing washers. The
screws were driven from inside the hull horizontally into the rail, and from
below the rail, upward into the rail. The screws then do not scratch other
boats as you come alongside.
Looks good to my eye.

Pete -
I used 3/4 triple braid as a gunwale guard on my Elegant Punt. The correct
way to do it it to route a channel in the gunwale, then splice the line into
a continuous loop (grommet), slightly smaller than the total distance around
the gunwale. Then, pop the line onto the gunwale, and the tension of the
loop keeps it in place. I didn't do it this way
I started at the center point of the transom and nailed it every 4 inches or
so with 3/4 inch bronze ring nails. I worked with an awl and a nail set,
making sure the nail was always going through the inner most braid. I worked
all the way around to the starting point on the transom. It took about 2-1/2
hours.
I works great, and looks pretty slick, too.

Wacky Noodles!! No boatshop should be without them.
http://www.lifelikeproducts.com/lifoam/swimproducts.htm
(the tubular foam children's toy) Another brand name is "Fun Noodle".
Choose your favorite color, rip in half and glue on with contact cement.
They will wear out occasionally, but they're cheap ($3) and easy to
replace. Adds some flotation too.
The octagonal noodles ride against a rip fence for a perfect cut....but
I've also just cut them by eye with a knife (serrated helps). Solid
noodles for this - no holes in the middle.
Some sample wacky noodle gunwale applications at:
