[bolger] Plan Royalties
List,
This is an area that I have an opinion. Opinions are like backsides,
everyone has one!
I built my June Bug with the plans from Payson's book. I do not recall
seeing any admonition not to do so. I paid for the book and I feel that I
am entitled to the contents of the book. My wife bot Betty Crocker's Cook
Book and prepares meals from it. Payson's book is the same thing to me. If
I could sing, I could buy a song book and sing for my own enjoyment from
the song book and owe nothing to the songs author or to the publisher of
the songbook. Biscuits, boats and notes are all the same to me. I use the
plans in a non commercial environment. I bot the book to get the plans.
I also redraft the plans and cartoons found in MAIB and from Michalak's
catalogue. I put the boats shape in Autocad or Carlson's Hulls to get some
"relational information" to compare various designs. I also resize the
boats - Autocad and Hulls both do that nicely. I own the plans to
Michalak's AF3. If I build it, it will be stretched.
Once I pay for the Magazine, catalog or download a cartoon from an internet
site, I feel that information is mine. If I plagerize and or try to resell
it, that to me is wrong. If I add some of my input to the design and create
something "slightly different" it is still not mine to use for any other
purpose other than my own enjoyment - which includes building a hull and
using it.
I think that over the last 4 - 5 years I have bot 6 Bolger Plans from
Bernie or Payson. I have bot 7 Plans from Michalak and about 5 from other
designers. I have built 3.5 boats ( I helped on one). To me the value of
the plans is the layout of the components and the exact measurements of the
components. There is also considerable value in the building sequence,
builders notes and bills of material. If I develop all of that myself, I do
not consider myself cheating. When I do develop the building information, I
am using the experiences gained from studying plans that I have bot.
step step
The was me removing my self from my soap box.
