[bolger] Gregg, AS29, Junk Rig
Gregg,
foot compared to the CE of the Gaff Cat Yawl's working sails area which is
about 2" forward of the center of the hull. On this sketch I tried two
sails of identical size (think that could have some practical advantages)
but with more than enough gap between the sails so it is still possible to
increase the area of the main. Have in mind that the mizzen is easily
reefed and you can move a junk sail forward and backward. To put it short,
this is not the definite sail plan but to be able to carry on with hull
building it was necessary to decide wether a one or two masted rig will be
used and were to place the mast(s). A one masted rig would certainly be a
bit more efficient but the CE could only be matched with a VERY low aspect
Sail. Too low in my opinion.
When I find the time (my job is pretty demanding) I will place a picture in
the vault of a Dutch designed junk rigged sharpie (built 3 hrs away from my
place) so one can see what I have in mind.

p.s.: would you agree if I say that it's naturally that a builder has a
different point of view than a designer?
