Re: as19

Hi -

There is simply no need to concern yourself with the open bow - the
only time it is scooping water is when you are running downwind, and
you have so much momentum that it doesn't matter anyway. When you
are heading into the wind, the heeling of the boat combined with the
wind blowing the mast aft helps keep the nose up. Yes, you will get
some splashes, but nothing worth being concerned.

The benefit of leaving it open is a tremendous ease of getting in and
out of the boat at the ramp or on the trailer. Besides, it is fun to
have people asking about it - they expect a little ramp to drop and
tiny soldiers to come running out.

I do suggest that you add a mast tabernacle eg Martha Jane style.

Thanks for posting the article, Peter!

After rereading PCB's comments, I don't think you missed the point.
He DID mention the option of "filling in" the bow opening, i.e.
making it into a bow transom, but I got the impression that the real
issue was the fact that he took his "sea of peas" theory to the limit
and didn't sweep the sides into a sharpi-style point.

Personally, I still think it's quite a neat boat, and I bet you could
arrange some sort of false bow--angled pram, garvey, or regular
pointy-style--either drop-in or hinged, that would help reducte
the "irritating defect."

Thanks again,

Matthew Long

Since the as19 is under discussion, I put the MAIB articles by PCB in
the files section of Bolger2. Interesting reading if, like me, you
try to discern the mind of the Master.

PCB discusses the tendancy of the open bow to scoop up water ("an
irritating defect") and various thoughts about ways the bow could
have been designed. However, he does not mention the possibility of
simply installing a bow transom. It makes me feel like I missed the
point somehow.
