Re: Frameless Zephyr?
Hannes, I am not sure about a frameless Zephyr, but Dave Carnell
mentions that he has removed the center frames from @ 16ft boats by
placing 2 3/4 inch thick gunwales from 1 inch stock on top of one
another topped off by a 1 1/2 inch (again of 1 inch stock)gunwale on
top of that. Carnell makes note of it in his Featherwind plans
somewhere. Michalak calls it the "Carnell Flange." I hope this helps.

Matthew,
I received plans for Zephyr today. I think about building it without
the center frame - it would be nice to have a cockpit big enough to
sleep in occasionally.
You mentioned a Zephyr being build like this, with stronger
gunwales, I assume. How Strong? Can you remember any
dimensions?
Hannes
p.s. I also think about making the decked end compartments
bigger- a bit of extra flotation never hurts, and it would shorten the
unsupported span.

David, yes you can! If memory serves, Dave Carnell of $200 Sailboat
fame built his Zephyr just this way. He used what Jim Michalak calls
the Carnell flange, a wider strip applied over the gunwale to form a
C-channel with the side panel. I have some of his comments at hom
from when I exchanged messages with him about building Zephyr. Drop
him a line, or I'll try to remember to dig them up at home and post
them.

Hi David, the shear clamp would have to be beefed up quite a bit,
because the standard boats sides distort quite a bit when sailing to
windward in a fresh breeze...the pressure of the leeboard. Can't see
why not though, because the panel are relatively narrow compared with
Windsprint. Wehad some wonderful rides in a friends Zephyr, and very
safe 2-up in a breeze.

I've been studying the Windsprint's frameless design and wondering if
the same thing couldn't be done to the Zephyr.
What do you all think? Could the Zephyr be bent around a temporary
center mold and then stiffened up with an oversized sheerclamp?
