Dakota's cabin headroom varies from 6'3" to 6'6". It doesn't
appear top heavy. As someone mentioned, the Dakota hull
sides up to the shear are higher in relation to the overall height
than in Idaho. Dakota has a heavy 1 1/2" bottom with a 2' wide 2"
thick full length shoe in addition.

It appears that the boats with rocker (TN & Dak.) are less than 5:1,
length to width, and the flat bottoms are more than 6:1 (to make them
faster??). Is that right?
I also looked at several section drawings and it appears that cabin
height is always near to or less than the width (to prevent being top
heavy?). So max. height for a sneakeasy shelter would be <4 feet,
Idaho- <5 feet. Stand up headroom would be marginal for Tenneessee
(some modified TN Duck Flats boats have stand up shelters, I think)
and generous in the bigger boats. Theory may have holes.

I think the State boats are all about the same 6:1, length to width,
except Tenneesee. I'm not sure about Dakota's width. I have seen
inconsistent numbers on several sites. The house height and bottom
rocker vary and do not seem proportional from one size to the next.
The weigth problem with Sharpshooter was people weigth up high and as
stated standing headroom does encourage standing.

You might have to be a little bit careful to raise the
superstructure of Idaho. Isn't she narrower proportionally than the
other State class boats? Read Bolgers comments re Sharpshooter in 30-

I have never been on either boat but I did do a lot of research balancing
the pro's and con's between the Idaho and Tennessee. I have plans for both
and have via snail mail gotten some information from Mr. Bolger. Here is
why I am currently building a Tennessee instead of the Idaho.
As designed the Idaho will be faster but use a lot more fuel where the
Tennessee is a displacement design to use minimal fuel but limited to 2x
hull speed at best. The Idaho will be more sensitive to weight distribution
as an boat with a flat run, where the Tennessee will be more forgiving with
a load. The Tennessee is about 10 inches wider with a more conventional lay
out for the cabin.
The Idaho has no rocker in the hull where the Tennessee has full rocker for
her draft. Though Phil Bolger claims both are about equal in handling rough
weather "to a point" ( what that means I'm not sure), I have a personal
belief that a bit of rocker is better anytime you have sizable waves.
So again, if you want speed and not concerned about load sensitivity, go
Idaho. If you want to be able to cruise and speed isn't a big issue, go
Tennessee as she can handle a bit more of a load and not as critical of
where it's placed. Also as noted before, because of her rocker the
Tennessee will handle better in tight quarters such as marinas. I.E.
tighter turning radius with less drift.
My decision was based on personal needs, each of us have our own. Best of
luck in you endeavors building either the Idaho or Tennessee.

The Idaho has a flatter run aft to allow for a larger motor and planing.
The Tennessee is strictly a displacement boat, but is a little more
efficient at low speeds. The boat in the picture is a "serious" boat,
unlike the Bolger boats mentioned above which are "instant" boats.
Basically they are cheap plywood boxes that can get you on the water with a
minimal investment in time and money. I don't mean to disparage "instant"
boats, either - I have built half a dozen (including Tennessee) and am
wondering what my next one will be.
Chuck
Can we have a little more information please? Is this a
modified Idaho?
And on the subject, can anyone give me a quick rundown on
the pros and cons of the Idaho vs Tennessee? I must say,
the boat pictured below has much nicer lines than the
Tennessee to my eye.
Bruce Fountain
