[bolger] Re: Tarzan & his son
If you create "jobs" for your son to do, he will feel like he is helping
Daddy, and stay out of the way.
-Find a tree stump, log or some other large, unmovable (for a 3 year old) piece
of wood, bang about 25 common nails in about halfway, give him a hammer and let
him have at it.
- Do the same thing with nuts and bolts. Install some large bolts through a
piece of board, give him his own pair of pliers and let him fasten and unfasten
the nuts (if you scribe the last few millimetes at the end of the bolt, it will
keep him from getting the nut all the way off, therby preventing a choking
hazard).
-Keep all of your cast off and cut off end pieces in a box, and make that HIS
wood pile.
- A few sanding blocks can be included in the wood box. kids love the different
textures and the sounds of rubbing tings with sand paper (if you make it very
light sandpaper, he could even help you sand the hull with very little effect).
-Get a little bucket and paint brush, put about 1/2-inch of water in it, and
let him "paint" something with the water (the car, the house, a toy
boat...anything water will not harm).
These are just a few ideas that come to mind. Look around the shop, andyou can
probably find several more.
Good Luck
David
he's just a big young boy). I do have a back pack (made in Italy!), but
13 kg on my back when I'm on my knees is going to kill me... Then he as
an insane passion for my hair and my glasses... I'd play soccer
instead...
Best, Pippo

helped me in lofting the sides (I know, I know, I'm going to do it
again... ;-)). When he was 5 and I was on my first boat, I had him using
the rotoorbital sander, rasps, files, sandpaper. Just keep the kid far
from cutting tools, and always keep the power tools disconnected when
you're not using them. Giovanni has also been very helpful when he
borrowed me his Sandokan which is scaled 1:12... great for studying
plans... 3 years old looks a bit too young though, but he can still help
when meausring and drawing, and maybe painting...
However, you'll discover that they get bored soon... Their "attention
time" usually lasts less than 30 minutes. After that, my son starts to
walk around in the garage (and over my lofted lines) looking for old
toys...
Best whishes for your Micro, and keep us posted!

Your 3-year-old will not be much help, but what a joy! Enjoy his company,
for in a few days (it seems) he'll be off to college, or marriage, or ...
As for the building, I find it goes better in short sessions. There is a
lot of sequenced work and waiting for glue/paint to dry can be left alone
while you live your real life. It is better if you can allocate a space to
the project so that it does not have to be cleared away every time you leave
it.

Hi. I'm new in the list, and I'm writing from Premià de Mar, near
Barcelona, in Spain. 300 meters from the Mediterranean Sea.
I'm an admirer of Mr. Bolger's and his designs, even if I never saw a
single boat, only fotos, plans and a lot of web pages. I wrote to him a
letter years ago, and I received a nice reply (dated in oct l996).
Now I'm interested in Micro plans (direct from PB&F). It's going to be
my Christmas present, but I have two problems to build it:
*The first one is my job (I'm piano tuner), with crazy schedule and
variable working hours. But I'm happy seeing that people with less time
than me can afford the project.
*The second one is my three-year-old son. He wants to help me, but -I
repeat-, he's three years old. Can anybody tell me how old must a boy
be, to be a help and not a trouble?.
Any suggestions about both questions will be welcome. Especially from
those who have kids. (By the way, my son enjoyed "Tarzan" a lot).
Regards,
Francisco Ramírez

My best friend and most trusted advisor relitive to anything that can
be purchased at Home Depot (are they in Spain yet?) got a Kelty brand
back pack for his son.
He wears his kid on his back doing everything but using a circular
saw, and his son seems to like it very much. He's probably not as big
as yours, but wearing your three year old will doing all that
stooping and bending will do wonders for your legs. When you and your
family are out on the Micro, (and you're sporting one of those
europeany bathing suites,) your wife will appreciate it.
But seriously, Nick comes out here to our house all the time to help
me with fence posts, door jams, and other home owner crap. The Kelty
pack seems to do the trick. I plan on getting one as soon as Margaret
Ellen is big enough.

give your son a scrap of wood, an old paint brush and some non-toxic water based paint and let him go after it.
He's helping!!!
Then find a place in the hold to put it.
Just keep him away from the epoxy....
