No, you can't get a virus from a graphics file. When you get an attachment
to an email check the filename extension before opening it, if the filename
extension is .gif, .tif or jpg the attachment is safe as houses, the ones
to watch out for are .exe, .com, .scr, and if you use Microsloth Word .doc.
When in doubt don't open the attachment, save it to your hard drive then
check it with your up-to-date virus checker before opening. Unsolicited
executable file attachments are always viruses though, even if they come
from friends, so just delete them as soon as you get them. I've heard that
Micro$soft mail programs can be set up so that attached executables and
Word documents are automatically opened!! That's suicidal! In fact many
viruses are designed to take advantage of the flaws in MS mail programs.
I don't have Word, and no virus would know what to do with the old DOS mail
program I use, so I'd have to do something very stupid to catch a virus,
and even if I did the poor thing wouldn't be able to figure out how to
spread itself. :o)

Thanks,
I have cleaned my disk, and was apparently infected. I can't imagine how I
got it. I never open an .exe file
from anyone unless I know what it is. I am only on
a couple of groups, all boats, and don't recall seeing
anything suspicous. I ran Norton just before sending
this and it reports clean. The only thing that I can recall
opening recently is a few photographs. Can you send
a virus with a photograph?

I received a reply to my last Teal posting with an attachment
(hamster.ZIP.scr) containing a virus.
The message was apparently from James Fuller. He seems to be a
legitimate poster to this group, but apparently has been infected by
a virus. I sent him an email telling him about this. If any of you
know him let him know that he needs to get this cleaned up.
Please be careful what you open.

It infected my email, clever little bugger. Heck I'm a programmer by trade
and I slipped up and let it in and sent out two emails before I caught it.
