Re: [bolger] Re: What to do in Maine for an afternoon next week?

From Port Clyde you can also take the mail boat out to Monhegan Island.
Really neat place.

I concur,
Why even go to Bangor? The boating is lousy there. Continue
north up through Thomaston and then to Port Clyde. Take the mail
boat out to Vinal Haven and enjoy God's country. Hopefully, he will
keep the fog away. If you go swimming, don't stay in too long no
matter how hot it is.

I always try to arrive by boat. There's no admission desk dockside :)

around, it is well worth it.

Not very active, but there's sometimes somebody around to talk to.
The outbuildings have the most interesting exhibits - small boats.
The Museum's library is very good. Just let the librarian know if
you'll be stopping by.

you can get in to see where they construct destroyers.

Check out the new floating drydock and assembly line area. Very
impressive. You missed (by about 2 weeks) the last ship to slide
down the ways.

That was Shelter Institute, since moved.

That would be "LL Reny's". It's really an acquired taste (like
Bolger). There are now lots more upscale shops downtown.

If you go to Bath, let me know, I'll tell you where to get lunch.
And don't miss the Jetboat tour of the Kennebec, leaving from the
town dock in Bath;)

Assuming you're driving to Bangor, Bath is right on scenic Rt1, and
on the way to Thomaston, famous for HH Payson.

Your choice of the Bath Museum is an excellent one. It's been 3+
years since I was there. The museum is enlightening and well
designed, it won some architectural awards. Adjacent to the museum is
a ship building school and if you can poke around, it is well worth
it. Also in Bath next to the bridge is Bath Iron Works - I don't know
if you can get in to see where they construct destroyers ("construct
destruct?"). Downtown, near BIW, they used to have a 70's type DIY
homebuiding outfit - it is a great resource for tools and power
generators. Bath, near their courthouse, has a famous funky cheapo
department store for gifts. Nearby is a very good hobbyshop - I found
some little pressed tin boats powered by a small candle and a copper
tube. I thought they were extinct!
On your way back to the airport, there is one of the finest beer
halls I know - The Great Lost Bear (Forrest Ave.). It's fresh
microbrews (in kegs) rivals what I can remember of beer choices in
Amsterdam.

John,

Unless you can get out on the water, get out of Portland. LL Bean
used to be a great store to visit(20+ yrs ago) but now Freeport is
just a continuous traffic jam leading to endless outlet stores. Best
to shop via the Web. I'll cast another vote for the Maritime Museum.

As far as Payson goes, my inlaws live right around the corner from
him. Make sure you turn the right way!

Payson is hardly close. The Bath MM is "finest kind." Of course, you
could go to L.L. Bean, but the truth is, it just a store. You could
stop in Brunswick at Bowdoin College and see the Peary-Macmillian
museum if you are interested in Arctic exploration. Or look at
the 'Old Master" drawings and Winslow Homers in the art museum.

Bath is about 45 minutes from Portland, I think. You can't go wrong.
They have a good web site.

I took a "cruise" on the mail boat. It was cheap, lasted a couple of
hours, saw the harbor, and ended up having a long conversation with a guy
who owned a Quickstep 24, who had built a sailing dory 30 years or so
ago, and had a designer add leebards to it. Yep, you guessed it, he'd
gone down to Gloucester and met with Phil Bolger his own self.

I skipped the Bath Museum, mostly to build up points with my wife that I
would expend at Mystic Seaport.
I'll be flying into Portland, ME next Wednesday morning and have a whole
afternoon to kill before I make my way over to Bangor. The question is what
to do? I'm thinking the Maine Marinetime Museum in Bath. Is there a better
choice for someone with about 5 hours free in the area?
