[bolger] Re: CSD Skiff, aka the Perfect Skiff

Bernie, thanks for the comments. I couldn't quite tell there was flare,
sort of assumed that a squarish bow meant a squarish boat. Sean, I'll try
to use the digital camera to "macro" a pic off the old catalog and upload to
the vault. Can't understand why there aren't more of these out on the net,
it really is perfect. Any reason you can think of bernie why more aren't
"seen" on the net?

I've got to get out 100 small boat rigs to see how this rig works. I
thought it was like a gunter too.

Alright, I have heard a lot about the Perfect Skiff, but have never
seen that issue of WB. Somebody please tell me: what was the winning
design? Also is there a picture or drawing of the CSD Perfect Skiff
anywhere on the net or are plans available anymore? - sounds like a
great design.

Sean
Robert,

I built the prototype Perfect Skiff. It is a great boat and should have
won WoodenBoat Mags. Perfect skiff competition if they had stuck to
their rules. She is not a square chine boat and her sides are flared.
The flair is constant meaning you can cut the chine stick on a table
saw. Bolger has done this on several of his easy boats, just another of
his tricks to make building easier.

As an aside, when I finished my boat and informed Bolger he asked how
the Solent lug rig worked. It turns out he has never seen or used one
up until that point. He is right, unlike a sliding gunter which only
works good on paper, the solent lug a good solution for hanging leg of
mutton sails on short spars.

I like this boat a lot. Its best use is sailing, where if feels like a
racing dinghy. I learned to sail on a Snipe, and the Perfect Skiff
(guess I shouldn't call it the CSD Skiff as CSD is no more) seems much
faster and more responsive. It's least effective use is motoring, but
unlike the boat that one the perfect skiff competition it will motor.
It rows well but would benefit from a small fixed skeg in the back to
aid directional stability.

I have built over 12 Bolger boats and as many "Bernie" boats, and this
is the only one I still have.

Finally dug out my old CSD catalog the other day. Now that I'm actually
building something, it was fun to look at all the boats in a different
light.

Has anybody on the list built one of these? There's a pic on the front
cover, so obviously someone has. Its got it all, outboard, decks, room to
lie down, short spars. And with the square sections, the hull at least,
looks easy to build. Hardest part looks like the Martha Jane style rudder.
Square sections mean easy decks and bottom (with router).

Just thought I'd throw out a new discussion. You can sort of tell
everyone's been getting ready for the holiday season, not much in the way of
boatbuilding updates :( (Osswald's teal is doing the same duty as my
windsprint right now: storage area for boxes & stuff).

Hope to do some building over the holiday.
