Good evening:

The units that I have seen were not "wireless," and in any
event, were only suitable for very small gasoline outboards.

These units provide only steering control, no shift or throttle
functions.

In order to get a small outboard with battery-charging
capability, you will probably have to order a new engine, as you
will find a very limited selection of used engines with this
feature in the lower horsepower ranges. An option would be
to keep your cruises to a length that a battery could handle
without recharging.

Handling might get interesting in low-voltage situations.
A large passenger vessel in Florida, I believe, had an automatic
charger quit a few months ago, the batteries that supplied current
to the electronic engine controls ran down, and when the good
ship attempted to "dock", there was a large crash. No bad injuries
but many thousands in damage.

My opinion is, it would be an expensive complication.

Hook up cable-over-pulley steering to your outboard, run the cable
all around the boat, where it is accessable, and steer from anywhere
by yanking the cable. If you prefer steering wheels, you could
hook-up two or three into the loop, located at different points on
the boat. Depending upon the layout of the boat, a tiller
extension may be an answer.

later.

Is anyone familiar with wireless remote controls for small
outboard motors. I have seen them used on trolling motors.
They are controled by a small handheld device similar to a
TV Remote, and allow wirless control of motor.
I am planning to build a small, slow cruising boat, and would
rather not have a standard "Helm" inside my cabin, and a handheld
would seem to be very convinient. I could control the boat from
anywhere on it. Would be great for docking and mooring or anchoring.

Any info appreciated.
