Actually this is not quite true. There is a nice article in Sky and
Telescope magazine about it.http://www.skyandtelescope.com

The moon will be pretty bright, but not the brightest in several
centuries, or even 133 years like the currently circulating email
messages say. The moon's perigee, the winter solstice, the full
moon, and the earth's perigee will all happen on Tuesday night and
Wednesday morning, but not simultaneously - they will about 10 hours
apart. The brightest moon in recent history was probably in 1912
according to the articlecited above, and this one won't be that
bright.

It was pretty bright last night here in Northern IL. We had a nice
clear sky and it was pretty cold - near zero Farenheit I think. I'll
be out tonight checking it out.
Hi guys,

This is somewhat off topic (unless you use Lunar observations to get your
longitude), but the Moon just rose here, looking HUGE.

Apparently tonight is the brightest Moon for several centuries. The Moon is
at the closest point in its orbit to the Earth, and the Earth/Moon at their
closest point to the Sun, simultaneously. The Moon is 20% brighter than the
average full Moon. If you've got snow on the ground (as we have) it's
pretty spectacular. Being as it's the shortest day, we also have the Moon
at its highest point in the sky at midnight (for us to the North of the
tropic of Cancer, at any rate).

Hope you get a chance to have a look.
