I now know the word tanalized and that it is green. This is more

less than I do!!

Hi Jamie
Yep - I am trying like crazy to be down there in November - that area
is wonderful for small boats... i spent many holidays there as a
child usually in trailer sailers
cheers
David
If you come down the next year - the Americas Cup will be in full
swing - an interesting contrast to relaxed little ply cruisers!!

I've always wanted to see New Zealand, and this had me looking up flights,
but the kids can't take a break from school just then. Maybe another year
if it becomes a regular feature.

Hello All
First of all I really wish Lake Champlain wasnt so far away and I
could get up there with a boat... one day, *sighs*
Anyway... just wanted to add a few cents worth on good old NZ
radiata, first of all I'd like to be a heathen and suggest that
tanalised radiata is not only cost effective but practice effective
for boat building
Our mate Geoff Entrican has been designing and building sharpies and
good practical boats in the Auckland area for years (those older
NZers in this group may remember the 24 foot cruising sharpie "Warts
and All" featured in Sea Spray back in the late 1970s) wartsy was
built in tanalised construction ply and has been stored on a swing
mooring in shelly park and now the Wade for nearly 25 years - she was
in our family for ten and with help from the designer we made a few
scientific surveys of both fastenings and wood quality - in 20 years
of use was still in first rate state. This in a boat used most
weekends and with 1000s of miles of coastal work. warts' big
sister "Tokoroa" (34 feet long, lapstrake tanalised radiata ply, 4
bunks, full headroom, named after the main radiata logging town in
central north island)has also lived on mooring nearby for 20 odd
years and is in similar good spirits. Shes so quick that we have to
beat a 45 foot Mobjack by 25 mins in the Russell Tall Ships Race to
hold our own on handicap.
My father and I launched Geoff's latest design at Christmas "Amazing
Grace" a 32 foot lapstrake radiata ply displacement launch,(when he
reached retirement age dad found that everywhere Mum and the sheltie
dog wanted to go was upwind - so best solution was a launch that
looked and behaved like a yacht) the radiata was great to work with
and the boat is wonderful - handling the big swells off the east
coast at Easter weekend with ease... If I can manage the tech side I
will try and post a pic of the Entrican designed fleet - range from
12 foot boy scout sailing dinghy through 19 foot cruising sharpie
ketches up to Tokoroa and other big sisters, we love ply boats down
here!
But I take the point from an earlier kiwi post - radiata needs some
chemical help - ie green tanalising sticky stuff... but its cheap and
plentiful...
thats enough from me, just want to say I really enjoy being part of
the bolger group... keep up the posts!!
cheers
