Re: [bolger] Re: Lesson learned.

It also doesn't stick to poly like pieces of plastic trash bags. Clyde

If you're using epoxy, it doesn't stick to either polyethylene or
waxed paper. Backing up the joint with plastic film (cheap
dropcloth, plastic garbage bag, whatever) or with waxed paper will
work wonderfully with epoxy, and probably with other types of wood
glue as well. Have fun with the Gypsy - I built one about twelve
years ago; it s a good boat.

I'll use wax paper -- that seemed to get the most votes of confidence.

Thanks to all who replied.

Actually, you need to be careful which brand of plastic wrap you
choose. They are not all made of the same thing and epoxy sticks to
some of them. As best I remember, HandiWrap is OK; SaranWrap isn't.
I don't recall about other brands.

I am pretty sure all brands of wax paper are fine.

Actually, I've had good luck with masking tape, and also with
electrical tape. But to be really cautious, in addition to the tape,
put some polyethylene over the scrap (painters cheap drop cloth, and
lots of other plastic products.) I've also used plastic food wrap with
success.

James,

Don't use masking tape! You'll just glue it together with everything
else. Please don't ask me how I learned this--I'm still trying to
forget. Use wax paper or plastic food wrap (like Saran Wrap). Epoxy
doesn't stick to these products,

I have used supermarket type wax paper to keep the epoxy from sticking to the
surrounding wood that I didn't want it to stick to.

I have been slowly plugging away at building a Gypsy. Last night I
bought a saw and cut the butt strap for the bottom. I glued and nailed
the strap in place. Today when I went to turn the two pieces of plywood
over to remove the scrap piece I had under them and bend over the nail
ends I found that the glue had oozed through the joint and I now had a 4
foot by 2 foot butt strap glued to the other side. Luckily, with a pry
bar and another piece of scrap wood I was able to rip off (literally) the
scrap piece. The glue held well enough that there are pieces of the
scrap piece still glued to the two sheets of plywood. For the remaining
butt straps, I am planning on putting masking tape over the joint on the
bottom side before I apply the glue. Does anybody have a better idea?
