Re: folding schooner question
Based on my discussions with Leander (who met with Payson), Payson
did not like or use the Bolger-designed latches. At least one Payson-
built boat had straps fastened thru the bilge keels, rather than thru
the chines.
If built as designed, the chines have a lot of hole thru them in way
of the daggerboard trunks. Payson thought that strength might be too
much reduced.

Hello Mitch: The plans for the folding schooner also appear (very
much reduced) in Dynamite Payson's original "Instant Boats." All
three sheets are there, but the keyed instructions, which may contain
additional information, are not included.
I'm puzzled by your reference to holes "on the bottom of the boat."
If this is accurate, the latches may not have been built to the plans
I'm looking at.
As best I can tell, the plans show two sets of hardware: four
large "hinge brackets" mounted on the deck, and two "chine latches"
mounted on the SIDES of the exterior chine logs (near the bottom, but
not ON the bottom). (The latches, of course, hold the boat "open"
while sailing.) The dimensions for the latches are listed as 3" x
1'0".
If you like, I'll try to scan an blow-up of the latches at the office
tomorrow and send it to you via e-mail.

Our friend Leander is still looking to have latches made for his
Folding Schooner. If you solve the mystery, be sure to share the
secret with him.

Plans for the Folding schooner and their latch's are in the book "The
Folding Schooner" by P.C. Bolger. I would suggest having a look in the
library for it, unless some one else scans them into the files.

Hi-
I am currently in the process of restoring a folding schooner that
was built by the Payson Boatyard in '73. She is a fine boat and is
starting to look pretty sharp now that she has been repainted. The
boat came to me via Lake Sunapee, NH where she had been sailed on and
off for the past 20 years. As far as I know she has not been in the
water for 5 or 6 years.
Now that she is painted, we are very close to a launch date. The
problem is this: the metal bracket mounted on the keel that holds the
two halves together is missing. There are two holes drilled on
either half of the keel, on the bottom of the boat, below the
hinges. I am looking to replace these brackets. Does anyone have
the dimensions of them so that I can have one made, or do you know of
any pre-made for sale? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mitch Feeney
